I'm surprised they still had the original sign up, scrap metal is being stolen everywhere. Last when I was in the US, General Lafayette was missing his sword for the same reason.

Yep. I'm surprised they kept the real thing hanging there. I would have made a replica and put the real thing in a museum.

I doubt it, for the simple reason that it was unscrewed at one end and broken off at the other. Although, it would probably fetch a million in the black market.

It's important for the same reason that preserving the entire concentration camp is important which is so that what happened there cannot be denied or forgotten.
