The Caribbean Sea entrance of the Panama Canal is further west and the Pacific Ocean exit, so when moving from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific you have to move west to east. That's pretty counter intuitive.
Hell, I think the fact that the universe isn't a uniform gray mass - or some other equally simple thingamajig - is rather weird.

The existence of me and the universe is the strangest (to my logical mind) proven phenomena that I can imagine.
