Bullet Factories Working 24/7 in the US
Is there usually an upturn in stockpiling when a Democrat is in the White House due to fear of new gun laws? I would have thought there was a shortage due to the 2 wars we are fighting.
Too bad Michigan doesn't have bullet factories instead of auto factories. Our economy could use it. I feel a bit silly, but I forwarded this on to my Congressman asking how long it would take to build an ammo factory.
America armed, but guns not necessarily loaded
NEW ORLEANS – Bullet-makers are working around the clock, seven days a week, and still can't keep up with the nation's demand for ammunition.
Shooting ranges, gun dealers and bullet manufacturers say they have never seen such shortages. Bullets, especially for handguns, have been scarce for months because gun enthusiasts are stocking up on ammo, in part because they fear President Barack Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress will pass antigun legislation — even though nothing specific has been proposed and the president last month signed a law allowing people to carry loaded guns in national parks.
Gun sales spiked when it became clear Obama would be elected a year ago and purchases continued to rise in his first few months of office. The FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System reported that 6.1 million background checks for gun sales were issued from January to May, an increase of 25.6 percent from the same period the year before.
"That is going to cause an upswing in ammunition sales," said Larry Keane, senior vice president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a trade association representing about 5,000 members. "Without bullets a gun is just a paper weight."
The shortage for sportsmen is different than the scarcity of ammo for some police forces earlier this year, a dearth fueled by an increase in ammo use by the military in Iraq and Afghanistan....

The under belly of the society expects major riots and social unrest due to collapse of our economy for the bottom 50% of the population.

who is the underbelly? Are you saying criminals are the ones buying up all the bullets?

As much as pro-gun people hate democrats, you know that the guys who own the gun and ammo companies/stores LOVE it when democrats get elected, because the gun nuts always go crazy stocking up on ammo and weapons for what they feel sure is an impending dempocalypse.

so very true. If my husband though fishing equipment would be controlled, he would be thrilled to have an excuse to go buy all kinds of new stuff. He's hoard tackle all over the place.
I wonder if more people are reloading their own bullets? (My dad did) But since 9/11 I would think gunpowder and the like would be watched/controlled more.

Hunters are a bunch of pussies. They continually cry about not having a fully automatic assault rifle so they can hunt defenseless wild game. Hunting for sport with a fully automatic weapon signifies one thing, small dick syndrome.

In Louisiana, the news is that Police have shortages on bullets to train...Police usually get recapped bullets for training- even those are in short supply....go figure...

Apparently there's been an ammo scarcity in the commercial market since just after the election. I haven't been around to experience it personally but I swung by a Walmart a few days ago to buy a few boxes of .45 ACP and the only thing in the case was three boxes .40 S&W. There's been a noticeable increase in price of quality milsurp NATO calibers since late 2003 or so, but that's got more to do with the government buying it up faster than usual. The Russian stuff in steel cases with high-ammonia propellant is still widely available, of course, but I steer clear of it.
Don't be retarded. Nobody who hunts with a full auto rifle will bag a goddamn thing. Hunters are keenly aware of this. People who post kneejerk opinions on the internet, not so much.

So, if I wanted to join in on the fun and get a gun for home defense, which gun would you guys recommend? A handgun? A shotgun? A revolver? An automatic? And is there a good gun safe available to keep the kids from getting ahold of the gun? I've heard the NRA and other groups offer gun safety courses, any info on those?

Do you have any shooting experience? Do you live in the city, suburbs or country? Would you use the gun for any sort of recreational shooting, or just for home defense?

Here, the DNR (dept of natural resources) has gun safety classes. You MUST take it if you were born after 1960.
