pushing the envelope

    This expression makes no sense to me whatsoever. How does "pushing an envelope" have anything to do with going beyond boundaries?

    I hate this expression.

    it isnt a mailing envelope. envelope as in 'the boundary'...all encomposing.

    It's envelope as in "flight envelope":

    And should more accurately be "pushing (to) the limits of the envelope".
