I think I read it when I was 10 or 11, in the mid to late 90s.

The book was about some kid who was in some kind of contest at school. It was some type of environmental competition. The main character tried to come up with more efficient ways of doing kitchenwork. I remember that he tried cooking a fish in the dishwasher, and he put some groceries under the hood of a car (but he forgot to take it out and it burned on the way to church or something). For some reason, throughout the whole thing, he couldn't talk about what he was doing, so he got in trouble for ruining the dishwasher, catching the car on fire, etc.

I seem to remember them also growing worms in the book. They had jars of worms in the basement and were trying to come up with appetizing ways to cook them, and they ended up putting the worms in everyone's dinner as a secret ingredient.

Maybe I'm misremembering it, but I think that's the gist of it. Anyone know what it was?

Err...I could be wrong, but it might be "The Lie and the Which and the Fish in the Diswasher!"
