A blank space is still registered as a single Character, therefore it contains technically the same number of bytes as other characters.

(Here's a nice little piece someone's written on Characters vs Bytes)

There can be more than one blankspace assigned, for instance one that hackers used an awful lot of was the ASCII ALT+0127 (Using this method for ASCII characters can be handy in passwords, if of course the password form itself doesn't glitch when you try to use the ALT key)
