Satellite images cast doubt on success of Iraq surge

Basically, a US defense satellite picked up lower levels of light in Sunni areas even before the surge started. This means that Sunnis left those areas, leaving the lights off. So, it was ethnic cleansing of Sunni areas that led to the decrease in violence, not the increase of US troops.

Unless we invaded Iraq in the first place to reduce the level of AQ terrorism there, or to reduce the killings of US soldiers, I'm not sure what evidence has ever been presented that the surge "worked".

Is what we are closer to now the new definition of "victory" ?

Wait until the troops are all pulled out of Iraq to see what happens then. I predict, as I have since the start of this war, that there's going to be a civil war there.

Uh ... what exactly do you think is happening right now? There's been a civil war ever since Saddam was removed.

The problem is with the shia's not the sunni's, the shia's are the religous fanatics with the bombs, the iranian government is shia, sadr city where alot of problems were is now alot calmer.

The americans befriended the sunni's to take on alqueda & the shia's who are basically the same religous zealots who you cant debate with on any level.

The only reason iraq was calm while sadaam was in power was because he was sunni, if he had of been shia iraq would have been the basket case iran is today.

^^ Too much Shia hate, dude. They were disenfranchised and subjugated for decades by the former regime. Context matters. You'd be angry too.

Not really a civil war. More like a lot of gang wars.

Jumping the gun. Jumping the shark means something else, when a TV series runs out of new ideas and get ridiculous storyline like Fonzy jumping a shark....

    Just so you know...

Are you really serious? You can't be serious. Photographing things is a cornerstone of scientific data collection and observation.

Why is it even called a surge?
Why can't you guys call it for what it is- escalation.

You poor schmucks get stuck using the rhetoric the right chooses- no wonder you can't win elections.

Well, it is referred to in vernacular. The surge force is a force that gets committed at some point after the base force is fully committed in order to achieve a specific result that the base force was either not the cause of or not suitable for. It does not imply that the surge force is temporary after it is committed. The only real difference between then and now is that the surge force is allocated before the mission is executed, though, which this one in particular obviously was not.
