Britain should no longer rely on U.S. assurances that it does not use torture on terrorism suspects, an influential committee of MPs said in a report released on Sunday.

Britain had previously taken those assurances on face value but after the CIA acknowledged "waterboarding" three detainees, Britain should change its stance, the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee said in its annual report on human rights.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband told parliament in April he thought the technique, where a suspect is tied down on a board and water is poured over his or her hooded face in a form of simulated drowning, amounted to torture.

U.S. President George W. Bush vetoed legislation in March that would have banned the CIA from using the technique.

Britain is a signatory to a U.N. convention barring the extradition of a person to another state where there are substantial grounds for believing that they would be in danger of being subjected to torture.

So Britain won't be handing over any suspects as well now. Good for them. Now lets see if they practise what they preach.

I still get a kick out of how some people call waterboarding "torture".

I bet if you took a poll of people and stated to them : "You are about to be tortured, what method do you chose ?"
    A. A NAZI concentration camp.
    B. A KGB torture cell.
    C. A torture session by the Al Qaeda.
    D. A waterboarding by the CIA.

I bet 100% of the people would laugh, wipe the sweat off their foreheads, and gleefully pick "D".

The Nazis actually ruled out waterboarding as they considered it torture.

The Nazis had no limits when it comes to torture, but waterboarding is definitely a form of torture - all the more insidious as it leaves no marks.

I think it's possible that terrorist suspects could evade extradition using this law.

All this caterwauling while SAM trudges to and fro upon the backs of how many untouchables? How many people starve while selfish SAM sits here whining about -- what? a few hundred AT BEST -- "torture" victims? How many millions live in de facto slavery cleaning feces with their bare hands all around her while she sits around pattering away, numbly, at her computer, desperately trying to distract attention away from the fact that nothing is more evil than the selfishness she displays.

    The ultimate hypocrisy.

But sure, we'll all drop what we're doing and giddy-ap to SAM's selfish little tune.

India's poverty cannot compare to deliberately torturing people in our custody. One is long term problem that many countries share, and the other is a violation of the rules we claim to uphold. This debate tactic can be called the "bigger fish to fry argument".
