A vicar was so incensed to see Playboy stationery stacked on a shop shelf next to children’s merchandise that he decided to take direct action, and pulled down the display.
The Reverend Tim Jones, 40, said the pornography empire deliberately aims the bright pink pencil cases and note books, branded with the distinctive bunny logo, at young girls.

So, he decided to take a stand and threw the offending merchandise from shelves in the York branch of Stationery Box, after getting the full backing of the store manager.

Rev Jones said: "I told the assistant manager, who was on duty, I was going to be launching a protest at the shop, and I went over to where the Playboy material was on the shelf alongside the Winnie The Pooh and Mickey Mouse items.

"I started tossing it on the floor away from where people were. I also encouraged customers to sign a petition against the intrusion of commercial brands such as Playboy into goods and services targeting children.

"The long-term intention of their strategy is to encourage children to see the Playboy bunny as a friendly brand appropriate for children, preparing them for early commercial acceptance of Playboy pornographic merchandise.

"This constitutes a kind of institutional grooming of children for their commercial exploitation by the powerful sex industry. It is indirect but not accidental. It is deliberate, intentional, cynical and wicked and must be resisted."

Rev Jones, who has a seven-year-old daughter, has persuaded staff at the Stationery Box branch to remove the entire Playboy range pending a "merchandising review".

A spokesman for the shop said: "Because we respect the views of the communities that we trade in, and following Father Jones' visit, we have removed the product from sale in this store while we review our merchandising policy."

A spokesman for Playboy said: "We were surprised to discover that Playboy stationery has been so inappropriately positioned. Playboy's target audience is 18 to 34-year-olds so we clearly did not authorise or approve the placement of our product next to such well-known children's characters. We will be reviewing this situation immediately."

I think he did what he thought was right, also playboy has said, they dont understand why they produce was put near the disney items when they're items are desinged for 18 - 34 year olds, if that is the case why do they make hoodies, t shirts, etc etc for under 15 yr olds, i have seen kids as young has 9yrs old wearing playboy items

So the bright pink pencil cases and note books are for 18 to 34 year olds?
    :bugeye:
    What a load of baloney.

Playboy is the thin end of a large and nasty wedge.
    Hurrah for the Vicar!

Oh don't you just love overreacting Vicars. (can you hear the sarcasm?)

Instead of taking the truly high road and asking the Assistant Manager to move said product the Vicar tore down a display. He didn;t even once think to ask if Playboy had asked for the placement or if it was just lazy merchandising. No he threw a temper tantrum. One I am sure he won't repent for. Which is good becuase there need to be a lot less people like him in Paradise.

And where was the "tolerance" that the bible tells him to show? Seems he can't even keep himself under control over a small problem like this, imagine what will happen when something really nasty happens!

Hmm the vicar lacks imagination. If his intention was to bring attention to Playboy stationery in childrens aisles, he should have dressed as a Playboy bunny and sat there, smiling and winking at the kids.

Yes, I wonder who the parents regard as more of a threat, The stationary or the greepy (I love that word) priest in the kiddie section.

You must not talk of turning the other cheek when discussing sex.

There's a precedent for the vicar's actions: Samson and the Temple

    Yep. Cheap dig CF.

These companies don't care about stealing childrens childhood by exploiting them or making them obese.
It just made the man angry.

    I know. I'm just in a mood.
We've seen thong underwear for little girls, Bratz dolls with inhuman proportions, Britney (schoolgirl gone crack skank) Spears spewing sexual lyrics. If we examine the shit that parents consider suitable for their little girls we would find that this isn't that far out of line. I mean, the playboy logo is far less overtly sexual than A LOT of the other things that parents shrug off.
In the USAmerica, Highschool dating now requires naked pictures via cell phones. Do we want our little tramps to go to the prom alone? We need to get them ready for "real life" when they're little.

The last paragraph was sarcasm but you see what I'm getting at. It's not Playboy's fault that the "slut in making" business is booming. It's the parent's fault for driving it that direction.
I complained about the amazingly graphic headlines on Cosmo magazine in the check out lane but realized that it sells and until it doesn't sell it will remain.

But yeah, It's sad when a guy can see "Father,Priest,Pastor" next to "sex, children, playboy" and automatically assume that he's a pervert. Yet as I've explained, it's a symptom of the times we live in.

It's a wonder why young people hardly go to church these days, since the clergy are clearly so down with the kids.

i agree with roman. Hell how many young women (ie 18 to maybe late 20s though some keep it up latter) buy kids stuff (especially elmo) in a delibrate atempt to look "cute". The same age group are those obsessed with playboy merchendise

To be honest i want to start a pertition to keep the church out of especially politices but also sex and civil sociaty generally. The church has done more damage to human sexuality than 1000 hugh hefners and to be honest playboy is going some way towards adressing that and making sex an acceptable thing again rather than a dirty thing that just happens to be essential to the human race and fun to boot.

Hell there were huge protests about sexpo in adelaide which i find stupid as hell.

Missing the point entirely, demonstrating your usual lack of comprehension. The problem was that this stuff, which the Playboy company themselves has stated was marketed at adults, was next to childrens items, and that children are not aware of the meaning of the symbol, and that it is synonymous with pornography, and that's not a good thing for A CHILD to be introduced to.

This guy was reacting as a parent, and in the stories I have read about this case hasn't cited the cause of his moral obligation being his faith. I feel the same way this guy does, we let kids see more and more, and wonder why we have teenage pregnancies and behavioural issues.

is playboy r rated? i thought it was like ralph and fhm, and only showed boobs? how big a deal is boobs? no one flames discovery channel.

if playboy is making stationery, what's it have to do with the porn they make? seems overly sensitive to me. but then i don't even understand people's aversion to porn. saw a christian documentary on how 'porn turns young men into serial killers'. okayyyyy. the only weird guys i know are the ones who don't watch porn. and don't masturbate either. and that's covering a whole lot of dudes from a good socio-economic background.

with people saying 'what 18-34 year olds use pink pencil cases and notepads' - chicks at highschool and uni? i see heaps of p platers in sydney with the pink playboy seat covers and car stickers. you can legally have sex at 16, do they really need protection from playboy?

asguard was raising a relevant and interesting point. sure playboy makes porn, but does it have to be defined by that? do you have to label every product a company has ever manufactured when you use their goods? when you buy a motorbike do you stop and think 'now yamaha do make keyboards, and i don't want to like keyboards when i grow up'.

i think teenage pregnancy and behavioural issues come from poor parenting, not this kind of thing. they're problems that have been around forever, they're just sensationalised by the media. the old days you were a naughty kid, now you have behavioural issues. maybe teen pregancy is the flavour of the month for rebelling.
