Yes it was a humanitarian situation. Hundreds were being killed by indonisa backed millitants on a daily basis and so we sent in troops and then asked other nations to help. At that point though our country wasnt at risk, both our solders and our police force personal WERE at risk and yet inspite of the help we have given the US they refused to send one solder or police officer to help us.
Further more i dissagree that the US was in danger from Iraq and yet we still sent troops. Afganistan is more debatable and so i wont get into that right now, but the point is we asked for help and our "greatest alie" refused. In fact bush refused "the man of steel" and his "greatest friend" as well because our PM was Howard then.
So mad i ask, if they refused to send one solder of the 1000's you have to help us out or at least show that politically you were standing with us. How could we depend on you if we were asulted and needed those thousands of troops?

Nukes are a double edged sword. They are expensive to create and maintain. You also have formidable alliances, most notably with Great Britian. And NATO is bound to defend Great Britian should she get in a squable. Australia is an advanced society and could develop nukes fairly easily whenever she would decide to do so.
But like I said, if you want go ahead. But what does that tell your neighbors? Maybe having nukes will make you less secure. Especially, if your neigbors decide they have to keep up with you.
As for Vietnam, the United States left Vietnam because the South could not effectively govern themselves. A situation that we are experiencing in Iraq too. I don't think Australia has a problem governing themselves. The problem in Vietnam and Iraq was a civil war. Americans don't think it an appropriate expenditure of our blood and treasure to intervene in the civil wars of other countries...especially to prop up corrupt governments.

It had several. Pity you couldn't think them all.
James R! James R! You must be the best, 'cos you live you. Right?
I thought Aussie males tended to see things in terms of competitive testosterone, not estrogen.
Ah. That's right. You're a dedicated babysitter.
Bitching comes natural to ya.
I imagine "meow" is the appropriate response you seek.Last edited by Mr. G; 04-28-08 at 11:11 PM.

Thank you for relieving USAmerica of any future obligation to come to your defense.
Hope that passive, non-nuke philosophy works out for you.
Nice to know we're not needed.
Oh, those F22s you folks have been pleading we sell you?
Well, just flap your arms. You don't need no stinkin' F22s.

Don't do it!
Nukes are a bad idea. You're independent enough as it is, all things considered. Any more independence and you will be tempted to impose on other nations - the old 'bargaining with a sword' trick.
I'm from across the ditch and we deplore nuclear power, to an extent that the US wont even discuss a free trade agreement with us. So be it
