When I was a kid I used to play the WWF (now WWE) video game. Then at the swimming pool I body slammed my sister in the water with moves I saw in the game. She didn't particularly like it...

    Monkey see, monkey do.

It's not an absolute link, but common sense dictates that some kids will be influenced by the video games they play.

I demand evidence to back up this wild and outlandish claim.

Is that supposed to be a counter to what I said?

I dont believe this at all, there are mountains of evidence to suggest otherwise.

I like how people need "scientific evidence" and "studies" to tell them what they instinctively already see for themselves

The people demagoguing this sort of thing (i.e. making it seem like the link is absolutely there or absolutely not there) are (1) parents advocacy groups and (2) gaming advocacy groups. These debates are never-ending because both of the demagoguing sides are wrong (as all demagogues always are).

The real answer is that the link is not absolute, i.e. it doesn't happen 100% of the time, but you can be pretty sure that your child might act out what they experience in the games they play.

But acting out what kids see in videogames doesn't mean that they are violent people. It just means that they imitate what they see like everyone does. My brother plays videogames about ninjas and watches tv shows about ninjas and sometimes he pretends to be a ninja and he throws things when he's playing, but he isn't a violent person he won't even play football because he's afraid of hurting other kids.

No, but studies can show whether or not being subjected to something can increase or decrease your risk of doing something, it doesnt need to be absolute, in fact it rarley ever is

My boys play Xbox games with Violence. They also have toy guns and swords around the house too. Does that mean they are going to act it out? I have never had a situation yet of either one of them causing trouble at school or hitting anyone. If anything they are more jokers laughing all the time.

I don't think it can be denied that playing videogames causes children to imitate them. Children imitate everything they see or hear. No matter where its coming from.

Yes, thats the well its never happened to me approach, just because they dont ever act out doesnt mean that they dont have an increased chance of doing so.

By acting out do you actually going around and stabbing people because they saw it in a videogame or do you mean just playing, like they are characters in the game?

True, but if they didn't play with toy guns or play army games does it mean they would never act in violence either? You just never know
I have always thought toy guns and playing cops and robbers was always just a typical boy thing.

It is, but it doesnt change the fact thatobserving violent behavior and or playing in a violent fashion doe statistically increase the rick of violent outbursts especially in young children.

I guess only time will tell with my 2. So far they are so easy going I can't even imagine it. I mean they have never even thrown a tantrum over anything . I will let you know if they ever end up a juvenille hall saying it's all my moms fault and those guns she used to buy us. lol

Also that is just a small part of what they do. They like playing sports, skateboarding, motorbiking, fishing etc.. If they became obsessed with it I would put a halt on it for sure.

I don't think videogames can alter your personality. I think it has more to do with who you are as a person that makes you violent not what you see on videogames.

Me too. My neigbour sons used to come over and play XBOX and if he didn't win he would throw the controller on the floor get all mad and storm out of here. I put an end to that quickly and said if you act like that you aren't coming over here to play and you will be buying a new controller. I thought maybe it was just the video game playing that got him so made. But apparently at school she got a note home that he owed 15.00 for a tennis racket. They were playing in gym and was losing or whatever and smashed it on the ground breaking it.

Luckily this phase only lasted a couple yrs and he grew out of it for now anyway. His personality is so much different then my kids though.

But at least I got to teach mine about not being sore losers, so something came out of it
