Thread starter has right to ask for thread closure publicly (in the thread) or privately (via PM).

members can pretty much ask for anything but whether they get what they want is another matter

here is the way i see it
    lets deal with specifics
    the thread in question....

an entirely valid question. there was a poll involved. 54 posts/13 votes
members apparently invested some time and thought (?), in thread.

why then would we have our efforts go for naught solely because of the thread starter's emotional disposition? his idiosyncrasies. his whims and fancies. i say this cos i see no rational reason for thread closure

granted q trolls sam as usual but a closure on that basis is at the discretion of the mods and not the thread starter

exceptions could be made if topics are of a personal nature. for instance...
    here
a resolution was reached. thread dead

my topic? bullshit. post here and it is ours!

    what say you guys?

    Good observation.

However there are possible scenarios when thread can be locked upon the request of its creator:

    a) Question raised in OP is answered
    b) Thread is not active for more than 6 months

Feel free to ad c), d), etc.

In other cases, if moderator receives a closure request and the thread is still active with valid and relevant discussion, that request can be posted publicly to all members to decide.

very probable in sfog and sf but unlikely in the general forums.

i find it way too accommodating to be extending that courtesy site wide. threads should be allowed a natural death. i recommend an inquisition before honoring such requests.

    comprende, chris?

    oh
please do not put anything up for vote/sound out before the general public. we are generally stupider than shit. i have a lot of confidence in your mods so let them decide (note the emphasis on the plural)

    cheers pal
    love your board

Gustav what if the thread starter asked a specific question and insted of a discussion on that question the whole thread turns into a flame fest or its just so hoplessly off topic that there is no chance of it comming back?

Those are the senarios where i would concider closing a thread if the thread starter asked me

since when did members decide what stays open or gets closed?
your default posture is to maintain active threads. by that i mean open.

    verbal warnings in thread/salvage
if unheeded or beyond repair, close
    you guys make the decision
the last resort, not a knee jerk first.

    eyeball this
the 52nd post dealt with the tp. the rest, inanities.
    never underestimate sci, buddy
