How about enabling youtube embedding here?

.......except, instead of enabling html or "object embedding", limit it to content that comes from the youtube domain, and do it like this:

Create a new special bbcode tag where all of the necessary params are permanently pre-set by the board (example - width="425" height="355" allowhacking="never" autoplay="not_in_your_life" etc etc etc) - thus removing any security risk.

People could embed the videos by encapsulating the video's "id" in the bbcode styled youtube tags

I belong to another site that does this, and we've had no problems. There may even be an existing vBulletin plugin for it.

I don't think it does really slow the loading of the whole page since the videos don't really start to load until you click play.

From what I've seen, It doesn't slow down the loading of the page (even when multiple users post videos). The only delays I've seen are in the loading of the actual video. The forum's page content will always load at its normal speed, but it may take a couple of seconds for the player to finally catch up.

A more detailed description -----The page will draw itself in the browser, and there will be a 425 x 325px dead-space in the post (assuming the person typed text before and after the placement of the video) that is eventually replaced with a frozen snapshot, and a translucent play button so the users can choose whether or not they want to watch it. There is no relation between whether or not the user can reply to posts, and the loading of the player.......if there is a long lag in the embedded player finally popping up, people can still post or navigate away from the page with no problem.

If the user clicks the play button, a little translucent circular animation appears in its place to signal the video being started, and the player begins buffering the video. It does not load the entire video when the page is first opened--only the snapshot.

I think the main problem with any embedding is 'Content control'. After all a poster could post something quite mundane and find an offensive video or hijacked 'snapshot' taking it's place either because the URL was malformed, Altered or the actual footage itself was replaced.

From the angle of operating a website there is also the point that Advertisement programs might require only the advertising source you subscribe to or any relevant funding/advertisement's from that source could be revoked.

What I meant was embedding limited only to youtube.com -as opposed allowing sciforum users to embed any ol' video from any ol' shady website.
All the params are handled by the board, and the only thing the user does is copy/paste the number that appears after the "v=" line from the URL of whatever youtube video they want to post. They would put this number between a bbcode tag (exactly like this [youtube]LOfI_RXk03I[/youtube])

Youtube videos aren't "swapped at the source" in the same manner......or at least I've never seen them use any "no leaching" goatse pics LOL

In the event youtube.com deletes the video on their end, the embedded player simply shows a message that says "video no longer available".

Do we really want to encourage posting YouTube videos here? That would make ``About the Members'' look even MORE like myspace? What's the problem with just linking to them?

Sometimes I post really rarely good videos and I'm sure no one clicks them (tragic!).

I certainly understand this, but do you want to force them on people? Why not just trust that people who are interested will click the link?
