Criminal aliens could get tax rebates under W's new tax rebate bill which contains language making them ineligible for the tax rebates. Millions of criminal aliens use individual taxpayer identification numbers, known as ITINs, as well as SS numbers, to file income tax returns with the IRS.

So now they get free immigration, free healthcare, free housing, free education, free welfare, free foodstamps, free everything, and now free money.

    I don't understand this sentence.

They are eligible for a tax refund under a law which makes them ineligible?

If these people are paying taxes, they are contributing to our treasury, nothing free about that.

They are not eligible but they may have found a loophole in that they have stolen SS and other ID numbers.

Would you be willing to raise taxes in order to deport illegal aliens?

I don't understand Bush's reasoning. Some of the best and brightest economists are saying that the money is not going into the hands of the people who need it to get the economy going. did you guys watch hard-talk the other night. The economist there is one of the youngest ever given a full Professorship. He basically said that (a) politics make for crap economic polices during election time and (b) the huge tax cuts for the rich didn't do jack but put money into the hands of the rich. In real terms it can now be proven that this policy didn't put money into the hands of peoples who need it to keep the American economy moving forward.

I've also thought about how very wealthy people are often happy to invest outside of the USA whereas middle class people usually invest within the USA.

Anyway, we're headed into a recession.

    Conflicting statements?

    Sandy

It would seem you've put yourself in a difficult position.

In the topic "Obama: Give Licenses to Illegal Aliens", you wrote,

Yet in this topic, you seem to object to legal, taxpaying resident aliens receiving the benefits of other American taxpayers. After all, the article you provided notes,

If illegal immigrants are actually filing tax returns, that's actually a plus. And if they're paying taxes into the system, their immigration status should not preclude them from a rebate. If they're filing but not paying any outstanding tax debt, their rebate should do what it does for other tax delinquents. Many people, the last time the government sent out rebate checks, received letters telling them that their $300 was being applied to their outstanding debt. It would seem that, while we're supposed to be disgusted by illegal immigrants, we're also supposed to be happy to take their money.

The big problem, though, is that it seems you're proposing that legal resident aliens should be screwed in order to make sure we can exclude illegals who are actually filing tax returns and paying taxes.

Perhaps you could help us reconcile seemingly contradictory positions? While you "have no problem with legal immigrants", you're willing to punish or hurt many of them for actions that are not their own?

This is a strange point to invoke, since the topic article in question dealt with legally-obtained ITINs, and not fraudulent SSNs. To note the aforementioned New York Times story:

In 2005, ITINs paid $5 billion in tax burdens. Between 1996 and 2003, the total was near to $50 billion.

There are legitimate questions to resolve regarding how these numbers are used, but these are beyond the scope of the IRS. Would you support an expansion of the IRS and augmentation of its legal authority in order to settle those questions? Should the IRS become a law-enforcement agency with powers pertaining to drivers' licenses, bank accounts, lines of credit, and immigration laws at the very least?

The ITINs are a separate issue from SSNs, as the Associated Press pointed out last year:

Perhaps you feel people knock you unfairly when you raise what seem legitimate issues. Part of that would be that you represent those issues poorly. Such as the point about fraudulent SSNs, which—and please correct me if I'm wrong—seems to be a response to Spidergoat's note that these people are paying taxes. While there is certainly a discussion to be had about fraudulent SSNs, it's separate from the issue of who has an ITIN, and how many law-abiding immigrants might get screwed in order to appease a ravenous nationalism.

    Let's get one thing clear.

Giving money back to someone that never paid any in the first place is not getting a rebate, they are getting a gift from the public treasury. This is nothing more than the government playing Robin Hood...
