What! Don't look at me like that.

A stale old porn movie is at the centre of a political row involving Dutch public television. Public broadcasting corporations VPRO and BNN are planning to screen Deep Throat, a 1972 vintage production, as part of a themed night on the history of pornographic films. Although the film will be aired after midnight and be embedded in a discussion programme, political parties are clamouring for steps to be taken.

Seriously, the story speaks for itself. Americans might actually recognize some aspects of the debate:

In online discussion groups, participants suggest that the Christian Union had better turn its attention to the excessive amount of violence shown on TV. They also say that people who do not want to watch explicit sex can always reach for the off button, or change channels.

Others, however, might seem a little foreign:

Dutch public television - government-funded, but editorially independent - is trying desperately to win back younger viewers who generally prefer the commercial channels. If broadcasters break laws in doing so, the government can only intervene afterwards. Trying to stop a show before it has been aired is seen as preventive censorship, and that is anathema to Dutch political culture. Most politicians, the likes of Arie Slob possibly excepted, would rather be seen dead than censor the media.

Really, can you imagine such an attitude among American politicians? We could only hope for such sensible cowardice. I mean, in this country we're apparently supposed to be afraid of Janet Jackson's tits. What the hell is wrong with us?

Seriously, though, I would hope this could serve as a reminder to my fellow Americans that we really do need to lighten up about certain things in order to concentrate on what's actually important.

The only real objection ought to be that it is a terrible movie. Europe is such a breath of fresh air at times, certainly when compared to the narrow minded jackasses that rule the American airwaves.

Yes, and Tiassa would be the first one crying when forced sex hits the public airwaves, not even considering that he helped pave the way. Then what, a new sex and entertainment bureau to "regulate" it? Sure, we've already got officials involved in sex trade crimes all over the place.

If the Dutch enjoy watching women being totally degraded, fine. They can enjoy their alleged "progress".

The dutch are often too progressive for their own good. Mind you its after midnight and it will probably rate through the roof from curiosity factor.

I was wondering when someone would say that.

A lot of the shit you yanks seem to talk about is bout some bloody sheila and her tits. Or some bloody wanker in a movie. I've been laughing and will keep on laughing..
While trying to cover up our own bloody arses.

Although to be perfectly honest, It's the same here, A while back there was some ruckus about 300 000 dollar set of chairs or some bloody nonsense.

porn degrading? how is porn degrading? what, are we supposed to watch porn where the woman is always on top, slowly moving up and down, and men cum in a paper towel?

how are facials degrading, while eating out a woman is not?
