"Spruce Grove residents woke up yesterday to a mysterious octopus-shaped hole in a frozen golf-course pond.
A hole about 1.5 metres in diameter was visible yesterday on the pond at The Links at Spruce Grove, along with at least 20 splash marks - the longest about six metres. "

    Hmm
If the meteorite must have been 'huge' to punch through the ice the hole in the ice would have to huge as well. Obviously, it isn't.. at 1.5 meters.
    A genuine puzzle.. :scratchin:

    Hum,
I reckon it was a caused by slightly warmer water welling up and melting a hole.

But, there are also similar holes made through massive bubbles of methane being released. This is quite common where there is permafrost.

    Anybody missing a husband?
Looks suspiciously like old Frank, out on his early morning round, played it where it lied and, timing not being his strong point (especially with frozen fingers) took an unusually large icy divot which saw him disappear into the icy depths and tried in vain to grapple himself out with a seven iron.

    Fuckin' obvious really!

    I'm going with methane.
Are they gonna test the water?

Yeah, silly aliens, they came to to the mandatory anal probing but disappeared in their own icehole!

Everything you ever wanted to know about holes in ice but were afraid to ask is below. I remain unconvinced it is a gas hole. I bolded the section on gas holes. Of course, who the hell is Bob Dill and perhaps gas hole science has made huge strides since 1990, but no one else went into so much detail so here's his stuff:

A couple of amateur sleuths determined to establish whether a meteorite caused an octopus-shaped hole in a frozen golf course pond last week went diving in the frigid waters Monday.
But the only proof they emerged with was evidence that a lot of people weren't hitting very well on the 16th hole.

BTW, $10,000? (seems quite a low estimate)
