I think you're mistaken there. The final five are Cylons created by the humans on Kobol. Back on Kobol, they had the ability to upload but started breeding like humans on the planet they colonized and called earth. For some reason, once they started breeding, they lost the ability to upload until the final five recreated that ability.

I love that we see the whole thing comes about by "John" who's on a vendetta against humanity because of his rage at not being "engineered" better. This part I love!

Yeah, he's pissed because he can't see gamma rays and hear x-rays.

And can someone explain what I just didn't get: what happened on Cobol that drove humanity away, exactly? And what happened on the homeworld (whatever it was) that drove them away? What kind of war?

The same thing (all this has happened before.....), a human cylon war that must have devastated the planet to the extent all the survivors left to found new colonies. But it seems that that time the humans kicked the cylon's ass since they went on to colonize 12 colonies and the Cylons but one.

PS I wonder if FTL was invented later, or if the final five simply didn't have an FTL unit available? Perhaps that technology (like uploading) was also lost on "earth" since the cylons there weren't too interested in traveling?

Could someone clarify if this is right?:

Humanity, on/near earth, creates cylons.
The war occurs, and the final five see it coming, escape with their resurrection technology, following the humans, in an attempt to warn them ?

They get there too late, and show the cylons how to create their own, in an attempt to buy time for humans. Then the final five are betrayed by john, and then are reinserted into human society ?

I have a question. I'm about to start on season 4 but I don't have "Razor".
Is "Razor" a must, or is it optional ?
I understand that Razor is just a side-story about The Pegasus, is thus true ?

Razor is optional, but it helps. It's a great side story. I'd rent it or try to find it online. Maybe Hulu.com has it. Check it out. It's free.

Does anyone know exactly how many more episodes there are going to be?

I know, there's all sorts of debate as to whether or not this is Season 4 or 5 but regardless, after this week's episode how many more are there to be?
I've got to say, I can't wait for it to end. The show was top notch when it started, but this season has bored me to tears..

There are five more episodes and then a TV movie that will some after that.

What a horrible episode. So, they've turned what started off to a one of the most profound, philosophical, ideological and intelligent characters (the reawakened Ellen) into a squabbling backstabbing bitch!!!? Fuck that.

Last week I loved her character. She was waxing poetic philosophy with Cavil and then degenerated into a back biting housewife. I get the need for drama, but this was just bad writing. Very bad.

On an interesting note: did anybody see that the Base Ship is nearly healed. It's spikes are nearly fully regrown.

Michael Hogan? I haven't seen him in other films, but he was good in this one.
I saw Olmos as Gaffe in Blade Runner, not many shots, but the voice is good.

I noticed the same thing. One minute she's (Ellen) forgiving Cavil for killing her, fucking with her resurrection (and that of the rest of the final five) to make them forget their past, torturing various members of the final five, commiting genocide against the human colonies, killing "David?" (PS could Starbuck be David?), and planning to subject her to vivasection. The next she's going off on Tigh for fucking someone else when he thought she was dead? WTF?

On the other hand, remember that she was a manipulative bitch during her life among the humans and, perhaps, being back among them brought that aspect of her personality to the fore. While on the baseship, her pre-colonial personality was dominent. Think about yourself when you see a bunch of old friends, pretty soon you're acting like the asshole you used to be without even thinking about it. Also, don't forget that Tigh killed her. She said she forgave him for that. But, like any woman, she took the first opportunity to go off on him for something else entirely. Women, apparently even Cylon women, are not rational beings.

That said, I did much prefer her baseship personality to the drunken bitch she reverted to on Galactica.

I've been thinking. We know that interbreeding Cylons and humans isn't totally impossible. What if that un-seen Cylon, Daniel, went down to Caprica from time to time, and fathered Starbuck? That would make a lot of sense.

Good theories. When watching Starbuck with the composer who disappeared, it suddenly seemed obvious that Daniel was her father. The other Cylons are putting the authorship of the song all on Hera, ignoring the fact that Starbuck claimed to have heard the song as a child. (I must say that I'm not overly impressed at the intelligence of the Cylons. If you're building people from the ground up, wouldn't you make them more intelligent? Why no ability to link up their minds to increase their computing power/intelligence? We can do it with desktops for Pete's sake.)

This is exactly what I was thinking. I believe we'll find out that "Daniel" was behind a lot of this. We'll see. I also think that you're right: Hera is the homing beacon.

I knew that she was manipulating Tyrol. The whole episode kept annoying me how stupid he is and how, again, the President saw right through the charade.

To borrow a cliché, it ain't over 'til the fat lady sings.

To introduce something more relevant: The late Jack Cady used to talk about the concept of writing oneself into a hole. The challenge, of course, is to write your way back out of it. His story, "By Reason of Darkness" (Prime Evil) was one of those. The way he grinned, and how his eyes lit up when he talked about getting a whole page into that one and realizing he was in trouble ... and the point is to write your way out of the hole.

It's an easy enough concept to grasp in the short form. In the novel, well, it's a bit more complicated. And to carry it out over multiple volumes? Well, the best result I've seen so far is Brust's "Khaavren Romances", which isn't entirely fair, but still ....

To put those two ideas together, though, it's part of my general optimism for the show. They've done so well so far; I doubt they're going to blow it. Still, the added tension is nearly delicious. Will humanity find a home? Will peace ever find a place among Cylons and humans? Will Apollo spend the rest of his days boning Starbuck's fine ass? Will the writers dig their way out of the chasm? Tune in next week, same Galactic time, same Galactic channel.

When you're dealing with a product like this, the question of whether the writing will achieve its job becomes part of the central melodrama.

Really, it's almost as fun wondering if they can get out clean as the show itself.
