An intriguing new study suggests that sitting causes enzymatic changes that causes a person to gain weight.

should I stand when reading a book than?...and do homework standing up?

or is it safe to assume that a compromise must be made?

Only 10% of regular lipase activity? That is very surprising. Does that mean ALL lipases? I can't imagine it does. If this is true you could take lipases from pills rather than destroying your furniture (but don't let that stand in your way).

Anyway...did they mean only chair sitting?

If so, it is another reason to switch to this style:

I doubt the rats were sitting in chairs during the experiment.
    Why do you ask?

... the rat is balancing itself...this takes energy and thus the lipase levels are not dropping.

    This is interesting.

On the other hand, common sense (reflected in the way school schedules are organized, which is around 40-50 minutes of sitting and a 5-10 minute break) and research into efficient studying and productivity all suggest that sitting for several consecutive hours is not feasible because the ability to pay attention lessens dramatically.

Too bad that the researches in the study mentioned above didn't explain what sort of sitting they tested; and whether this same happens when sitting cross-legged.

What about people confined to wheelchairs? Steven Hawking comes to mind

and he's been in his wheelchair over 20 years now.

...anyways we are discussing healthy creatures, Steven Hawking is not a healthy creature.

Anyaway, I just took off the back off my swivel chair. It is actually easier to sit that way. Knowing there is something to lean on was making me tired and lose focus.
Now I absolutely have to make an effort to sit up straight.
