Japanese is awesome. I posted the message just in case you are that arrogant as to say Romanian is the best. My Japanese is not fluent, its broken, because there are no Japanese lessons available at my area. Japanese written language is among the hardest in the world. I am fluent in Kanji though. Anyways unfortunately not every civilization in Star Trek share the sentiment. If The Federation kept a professional and elite armed force, then many would not have died in conflicts with the borg and the dominion.

oh :/ you didn't understand what I wrote in Japanese?

I was very good with Klingon. But I've been a little lax in practicing.
lol
Even if they HAD an elite armed force (they do now actually since the first encounter with the Borg in the Alpha Quadrant) they would be able to protect themselves against an artificial race like the Borg. Or the Jem Hadar. ST is (not only) about peace! so it's only natural that they would not pour ALL their resources into combat upgrades.
Of course we should also take into account the false security Earth fell into after the Eugenics Wars.
To say that they should have been ready for the races you mentioned, would mean that they should have had knowledge of every race in the neighboring quadrants! Which is not practical...they can't be all-knowing.

I understood the Kanji parts and some of the kanatana, I am no good at hiragana at all. I know my share of the Mandalorian language from reading Karen Traviss' Republic Commando series. Anyways, they should have trained new tactical commanders and combat troops instead of just developing upgrades. There are ways to win those wars without those upgrades if they trained their commanders well enough. Then again it costs more to train commanders and troops than it is to R&D upgrades and weapons systems.

P.S. Do you listen to J-pop and J-rock ( Japanese pop and Japanese rock ), personally I love Japanese music and prefer it over a lot of western music.

yes the more different things you learn, for instance, about one thing, (like taking a diffent route to your house that you have not taken before) grows more synapses in the brain.

Defend yes. But at some point we HAVE to grow beyond that!
Unfortunately freedom is an illusion on this planet. Like true Democracy. And like George Carlin said (in reference to things he mentioned about USA): ".....and I think even in a FAKE democracy, people ought to get what they want ONCE in a while!"
Anyway lol back to Trek

The fact is there won't be a true utopia, the darker side of humans is against it. We all strive for it, but we are held back by ourselves. There will always be bastards that take advantage of people's strive for democracy and freedom. I can think of a lot of people that would take advantage of the Federation system, because everything is state-owned.

oh ok :P I said: I learned a long time ago in Japan. I almost forgot it. Japanese language is more eloquent!
well Earth evolved beyond currency
so it wasn't a matter of cost. Yes there ARE ways. As proved by Picard and Janeway's crews, respectively
And all of you forgive me for getting so riled up
It's my Greek blood, and combative nature

Well one thing about Star Wars tho -- they get around quite a bit but hardly ever deal with really weird phenomenon kinda stuff. Trek are exploring the unknown in its entirety, not just out looking for other species. I guess SW saves all that kinda stuff for their comics and books?

If the Federation want to free the oppressed, they need the ability to defend themselves, the ability to defend the oppressed, plus the ability to attack the oppressor. The military is not just the shield its the sword AND shield.

I, figured as much, but I thought you said elegant. Cost as in time, resources and manpower, the universal currency. I think they should rip the incompetent commanders of their rank and replace them with the competent ones. When Vader's around that happens very quickly. No harm done. They should soften their enemies up with Special Forces and long range attacks then pick the weak ones off with fighters than engage the enemy. "Use the ordinary to engage and the extraordinary to win" - Art of War.

Excuse me, there are willing ones, just they are not alive to tell the tale or decided to stay at whatever place they explored and don't bother with returning.
