As for the shield on Alderaan, it would do well for pro-Trekkers to remember the beam coming towards Alderaan is not perpendicular to our view. The beam is coming from a position some where right and above the viewer/device. Meaning the beam impact would be the surface of the planet closer to us instead of the horizon. Also note that there is a green glow from where the beam hit, and the clouds under said green glow remain undisturbed. Anyone familiar with meteorology at all would know how unlikely that was.

Uhm... no... the glow actually traces the cloud pattern. Thus, either the water vapor was being boiled away entirely, or the glow was UNDER the cloud line, take your pick.

Considering how energy dissipates inside a highly porous structure, that would be hardly surprising. Plus, they would have had to blow up the Pegasus as well, all without damaging themselves.
