Because you're American or British, most likely.

How many CDs by French singers do you own? I'm guessing none. How many by Spanish singers? How many by Japanese stars?

One reason for the wide distribution of US and British music is that it is in English, and English is rapidly becoming a world language. However, I am sure that in Russia, for example, Russian pop singers outsell many US pop singers.

im not sure.. i mean, Australian artists do really well here but for some reason they dont make it huge overseas so much. singers like Johnny Farhnam, Delta Goodrem, The Living End among others all are huge here but i dunno if people from the usa or uk would even know who they are. so im with you. weird

    Regarding Australian artists:

Some have done well in the US. Some have in fact done better in the US than at home.

But, it is not surprising that Americans tend to prefer American music to Australian music, and vice versa. The music of a nation often reflects a lot about the culture of that nation. So, Brits prefer British music, Russians prefer Russian music, Indonesians prefer Indonesian music. Music is part of the shared culture.

Also, there can be elements of protectionism involved. For example, some in the US entertainment industry are now starting to complain about all the great Australian actors being employed on US TV shows, since they fear that Australians are "taking the jobs" of American actors.

There's Lata Mangeshkar. I would call a 40+ years singing career as successful

Because most people are only allowed to hear their own type of music

played from their own musical groups for the most part. Radio stations only

play what someone PAYS them to play. Radio stations play what music is

being sold the most of also.

    What about Kylie?

We can't get rid of her.

There's been loads of Aussie bands.. INXS, that band that did "always take the weather with you...", that other one (Jesus my memory is getting bad) that did " travelling in a fried up combie"... Men At Work?
