    Musharraf's declaration of emergency rule

The Pakistani president said he had declared the emergency to stop the country "committing suicide", because the country was in a crisis caused by militant violence and an unruly judiciary. US President George W Bush called for Gen Musharraf to call elections "as soon as possible". ... offering American monetary aid as well as a set of slightly used Diebold voting machines to assure his reelection.

Question: Do you support Musharraf actions in declaring emergency rule?

I think the latest rounds of violent protests are a sure sign that "those people" can't be trusted to rule themselves in anything like a normal democracy. As the films show, "those people" are little more than violent savages. ...some of whom are wearing suits and ties, and call themselves lawyers.

Nope, he was right to call for a declaration of emergency.

Absolutely, when the President of the country sets aside the constitution and blacks out media, the imperative is to take a picnic basket, set up blankets and lawn chairs and have a barbecue, with some chilled beers. That'll larn him.

Of course you'd be for the violent protests that are occuring in Pakistan, Sam, 'cause you just love violence, don't you ...as evidenced by your staunch support of Hamas and the violent Palestinians.

Why would anyone fight for freedom. Such a quaint concept. Dictatorship is the way to go! Huzzah for oppression and torture!!

    *passing around guns*

Since when did "dictatorship" mean the same as oppression and torture, Sam?

And you talk about "freedom", yet those very few protestors are the ones who are trying to control the nation with violence. See? You approve of violence ...just like you approve of the Palestinians doing violence against the Israelis.

And interestingly, you say "Pass around the guns" ....you'd give guns to those protestors?????

    Sam the violent Muslim!

The Middle East has been exposed to the ideas of democracy and republic since being conquered by Alexander of Macedonia. Prior to this Greeks builT City States all up and down the Eastern edge of Mediterranean Sea and the Romans had a Republic that eventually offered Citizenship to everyone in the Empire including Arabs. The concept of voting for a representative isn't new to the ME - not by a long shot.

But the people living there have never embraced it, for whatever reasons. Historically they have favored a balance between the Religious elite and a Monarchy. Actually, the introduction of Greek Democracy kind of screwed the balance up. They tried to implement a Democracy of their own - but it didn't work, this was 2000+ years ago. History is littered with the many occasions they tried to get a Republic to function as well - that didn't work either.

The system that works best for people in the Middle East is the one that they have always had - and that is a Monarchy balanced by a Theological institute of whatever sorts - - and this is exactly what we see in the Middle East.

When the Iranians had their revolution did they go for secular democracy? No. They could have, no one was stopping them. But they didn't - they went for Islamic Theocracy. The very last type of government one would care to live under (I'm sure many regret that choice now). With no Iranian Monarchy to balance their State Religion - well you can see the sad state they are in.

Anyway, I haven't made up my mind on Musharraf's move. He doesn't live in a Palace enjoying the good life drinking champagne on a luxury Yacht - he lives in a barrack. So he doesn't seem to be in it for the money. I think he is worried that if given the chance to vote Pakistani people will vote in a fundamental Islamic theocracy which will ruin all the hopes he has for the country of ever becoming successful - and IMM he seems to want the best of Pakistan - - but really this is like shoveling shit up hill.

I think Musharraf should take control for a short time and when the dust settles and Pakistani get used to their new/old leader he should dismantle the nuclear weapons while he has a chance. Then he should turn the reigns of power over to the people of Pakistan and let them vote in a fundamental Islamic theocracy. When this fails to deliver the goods and people realize, that "oh we still have to work AND we're still poor as" - well the thing to do then will be to blame someone else (other than the system or themselves, no no that can be right - I mean Islam is the perfect system, just look at .. ... ...?? ?? :bugeye: ... it's all India's fault!!!

And so at this time it would be best if they didn't have nuclear weapons.

I support his SoE. Pakistan was headed towards a really bad place, even worse than it is at right now. And all because Zia ul haq allowed extremist elements to get power in politics. This is the only way to deal with these elements.

id rather have him than people like Bhutto and Sharif, corrupt sellouts.

What "extremist elements" gained political power?

Mullahs were given free reign in the political sphere and because of that were able to influence the judicial sector and lots more. Musharraf should be supported in his efforts to get rid of these mullahs and extremists and people like the unbelievably corrupt Bhutto family and the gangster-turned-politician Nawz Sharif should be kicked out of the country. Today we saw them meeting with these Mullahs to create some kind of coalition against Musarraf. And ofcourse this coalition or alliance will happen because it is these Mullahs Musharraf wants to kick out of the political sphere in Pakistan.

Because of these hardline extremists and their political powers, almost every citizen in Rabwah has a case running against them and can be locked up at any time. Why? Because they are Ahmadi Muslims and the Mullahs decided they dont want these people to greet eachother in the islamic way or pray in the Islamic way or call people to prayer in the Islamic way. That is just the tip of the iceberg of what these extremist elements are doing in Pakistan. The western media and world should stop listening to the Geo newschannel and the corrupt politicians like Bhutto and Sharif and support Musharraf as long as he is sincerely trying to get rid of these elements.
