    Can you teach 'extremists'?

According to the UK Govt you can teach them to moderate their ways.

I would say that IF the leaders of the Muslim community would start to

teach their followers that extremists aren't helping their cause then that

would be of a greater help. Those leaders can talk to their own communities

better than anyone else and if they would go out and seek those

extremists and try to motivate them into joining back into the fold. I would

think that anything that is tried is better than nothing at all, it can't hurt to

try and change peoples ways of thinking.

    Where?

Among those on the road to reformation: Abdullah Sherif, 28, who went to Iraq in 2003 with four friends hoping to become martyrs resisting the U.S. invasion. At the rehab center, after feasting on lamb, rice, stuffed peppers and Pepsi, he explains how his fellow jihadis died in a U.S. air strike in Kurdistan early in the war. He was captured eight months later by U.S. troops in Mosul and turned over to Saudi authorities. "I had these ideas in my head," Sherif says of the teachings of bin Laden, whom he once regarded as a hero. "But he made a lot of mistakes, like targeting Saudi Arabia." The former jihadi now plans to take up Islamic studies and open a car-repair shop when he gets out of rehab.

Once Sherif is deemed fit for release, he will be sent home and, like the 700 or so others who have been discharged by the center, monitored indefinitely. Ex-detainees are given a monthly stipend--typically about $700--and sometimes a new car. Family members are enlisted to help watch over these men, who are strongly encouraged to start families of their own. Having children, the thinking goes, lessens the temptation to rejoin the jihad, which is why the program makes available upwards of $20,000 for an ex-detainee's wedding.

The Saudi government claims the program has been hugely successful, and security officials from other Arab countries have visited to see if the model might work for them.

How will starting families of their own encourage them to "diminish temptation" to return to radicalism?

Perhaps if they too had families that were dependant upon them in order to

live then they would reconsider in taking their own lives for an unworthy

    cause of a mad man.

    Its softens their hearts!!!

When you have a family I think your whole outlook changes alot. I know that happens with a lot of criminals. A lot of gangsters and crooks around here calmed the hell down once they got married.

Is that why we're constantly seeing Palestinian fathers proudly showing off their little sons holding Ak-47s and wearing "toy" suicide vests??

What do you mean moderate their ways? Take polygamy for example. How can you teach people polygamy is acceptable while at the exact same time trying to "moderate their ways"? Polygamy is antithesis to female equality. So if you teach enough people polygamy is A OK then sooner or later your going to teach the one with a screw loose that polygamy is the right way and unlike the other 99% this guy's going to go out and do something about it - and we're going to call this "extremism".

So tell me Atom how do you teach fundamental values that run counter to our colture and at that same time "teach them to moderate their ways"?

Look at it this way. You could teach 100% of the congregation that white skin people are inferior and 99% of the congregation will do nothing 99% of the time. In one ear and out the other. BUT once in awhile you are going to get someone who is going to do something - something that you will later called "extremist". Then what? You are going to re-educated this person? Well why the f*ck allow the person to be taught a messed up pile of bullshit to begin with???

    Here's another example:
    Westboro Baptist Church

Have you seen or heard the children who attend this church? They are psycho. They stand on corners with placards condemning gays to death and are notorious for picketing funerals of fallen solders with signs that their death is punishment from God for Americans "allowing" homosexuals to life their lives. I promise you, if you teach enough people this hate, one day one of them is going to get a gun and start murdering gays. When that day happens we'll all say that this person was an "'extremist". Well then what? We re-educate this person? How? And what happens when they return to the church that tells them Gays are the reason why this nation is bla bla bla bla ....

Insert the words Jew or Black or equal woman or whatever.

    See the problem?

I think you can teach extremists. You have to use alot of bullets and bombs to be any good at it though.
