Thread: What's Your Favorite Bushism?

  1. #61
    Thats the show

Fraggle Rocker i wasnt just refering to peoples ability to read and write (although that is what litracy is i guess i just used the wrong word). I was refering to both comprehention and verbal comunication. My spelling is apsolutly apaling, luckerly i have a teacher as a mother and a partner who could have been a journilist to read through my uni essays. But my verbal vocabulary is much higher than what i would dare right (because i couldnt spell most of it). The same thing with my ability to read, its at a higher level than my ability to write. Bush on the other hand seems to have no ability to:

    A) hold a train of thought for more than 5 seconds
    B) actually know the meaning of the words hes trying to use
    C) actually rember the quotes he wants

Now i am assuming most of his comments are written by a speach writer so either he cant read, which after watching him try to read a book upside down i wouldnt doubt. OR he has ADD (his minds working to fast for his mouth), or he is an idiot in the true sence of the word

    Bush said recently:
"There's no doubt in my mind when history was written, the final page will say- victory was achieved by the United States of America for the good of the world."

That would be the scariest final page in history ever

We covered this earlier in this thread. The emerging consensus of medical experts is that he has "pre-senile dementia." In other words, early onset of Alzheimer's disease.

As I also mentioned earlier, the purpose of this thread is to make us laugh. Insulting the President of the United States for that narrow purpose is fair. But since Bush's condition is a highly controversial and emotionally sensitive topic, and I don't want the thread derailed as it already has been a couple of times, I would prefer the members to take that discussion to the Politics board.

It's bad enough that we're making fun of something a guy does because of an (alleged) medical condition, but since he's a public figure that's just one of the great American pastimes. But let's not get into issues of intelligence, leadership ability, effect on history, etc. That's politics, not linguistics.

Aha, my straight man. Thanks for steering the thread back into linguistics.

Oh wow, that inconsistent use of tense made me laugh out loud.

the fact that you have to ask that means you do not understand what makes this country great

I can see this possibly being a linguistic issue, but please start a new thread if you want to explore it. Otherwise I'm trying very hard to keep this thread about humor, so it doesn't get derailed by politics.

This is politics, not linguistics. Please stay on topic. I know it's hard. But in addition, your post veers dangerously close to a personal insult against another member, which is a big no-no, especially under my style of moderation. This is a science website and I try to respect the scientific method, even here. Please comport yourselves like scientists.

All of you: Please don't go digging back through this thread to seize on non-linguistic posts. Don't make me sorry I didn't edit or delete them! This thread is about lightening our day with a bit of humor over the linguistic subtleties of the President's version of the English language. Let's stay on topic. If you want to talk about politics, we offer you an entire subforum for that. This one is for linguistics.

I like the one about co-existing peacefully with fish. I am still trying to figure out what he was trying to say.

No politics. If I can't say anything about projections of tenses betraying revisionist approaches under consideration, you can't talk about fish.

I don't know, I was wondering if he was after the fish vote? What do the fishermen have to say about peaceful coexistence?

Hmm. The "peaceful fishing village" is an ancient cliche. But not so peaceful for the fish, eh?

if he has early onset alzimes thats sad, its not a nice disease. I watched someone die of that disease and it wasnt plesent. Everytime my mum and dad went to see her she thought my dad was her dead brother.

But if we want to keep the thread light

This deal wouldn't go forward if we were concerned about the security for the United States of America

"See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda." --Greece, N.Y., May 24, 2005

"It's in our country's interests to find those who would do harm to us and get them out of harm's way." —George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., April 28, 2005
"Wow! Brazil is big." —George W. Bush, after being shown a map of Brazil by Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brasilia, Brazil, Nov. 6, 2005

Ok so they are old (had to google Bushisim)

This one falls under the "Scary if he meant it" category I think!

"I'm a strong proponent of the restoration of the wetlands, for a lot of reasons. There's a practical reason, though, when it comes to hurricanes: The stronger the wetlands, the more likely the damage of the hurricane."
