    I already used an old thread for this!

    Happy Ramadan.

    Are you planning on keeping all the fasts? I may need to skip some, I have some presentations and I don't travel well when I'm fasting.

    Hey Sam, since your my "go-to girl" for questions about Islam. How about about a brief primer on what Ramadan is, and why you fast...for all us westerners who are unfamiliar.

    Several reasons:

    1. It is a part of religion:

    2. To practise self-restraint, which helps in spiritual growth and increases mental strength

    3. For spiritual benefits:

    4. It also helps us to understand why one must provide for those who do not have enough.

    If you are pregnant, menstruating, sick or very old, you are not required to fast. Children below the age of understanding, are not required to fast. If for some reason you cannot fast (as in travel, when you can miss the fast and make it up later), you can either make up the fast days after Ramadan or feed one poor person for each day you did not fast (this can be converted to charity for one person instead)

    Cool...thanks Sam...I knew I could count on you for a quick answer.

    So...Ramadan is kinda like football training camp....A month of mental and physical preparation to hone your body, mind and soul for the next year of trials and tribulations. Is that about right?

    I like that exception...that's pretty cool. I imagine if I was Muslim, they'd be some well-fed poor people in my area.

    Hey Macgyver....

    if i may buttt in... i think the most important bit of Ramadan (as SAM has mentioned) is the somewhat appreciation of how poor people live who are unable to have food whenever they desire... this should make you more charitable, as you have a little "taste" of what their lives are like.

    ~~~~~
    cheers
    That's great Zak. I'm all about feeding the poor. Thanks for the explanation of your beliefs. Sometimes I have questions, but are afraid to start threads for fear of starting a flame war.
