Dont know why I bothered posting this here, I am sure the standard response will be "since its against white people.. its not racism, but if it was white against black.. then it it racism"

What kind of nonsense is that? Of course it is racism.

    What confuses me is this:
"I'm an ANC member and my daughter is the only white child in a black school. I deliberately kept it that way."
1.) Why would she do that? Is there some significance, some importance, some specific advantage to having her child be the only white kid in an all-black school? I don't get it.
    2.) What is ANC?

Of course it's racial discrimination, there's no question about it.

I'll second One_raven's questions...I'd like to know the same

If the shoe was on the other foot..can you imagine the shitstorm that would be created? Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be on "Nightline" calling for heads.

Hey, people, bear in mind that this is in South Africa. And it's THEIR version of AA and balancing racial ratios.

That news article leaves something to be desired and I'm not totally satisfied with it but I get the distinct feeling that some of you weren't aware of where this was taking place.

Discrimination is discrimination wherever it is.

Not the point at all. They are doing no different than the U.S. did when they first started trying to adjust employment ratios and housing 'adjustments' in certain all-White neighborhoods. And anyone who spoke out AGAINST it was labeled a racist and a bigot.

Since when is the US a standard of comparison?
It's discrimination and it can't be justified, end of story.

Those who labeled them such were wrong then, in my opinion.
There is nothing wrong with Affirmative Action, when it is drawn down poverty lines, as opposed to racial ones.

    1) Who knows.
    2) ANC. African National Congress (I think). Same party as Nelson Mandela.

Who said it was a standard????????????? Not me!!! Indeed it WAS discrimination here (and there) and in our case, the courts were driving it. That's all I was saying.

Ahhhh, but it wasn't along poverty lines! It was racially-motivated and giving Blacks a big advantage, expecially in terms of housing because they were given special aid and support to 'break into' all-White neighborhoods.

Don't get me wrong - I despise discrimination as much as anyone possibly can. But my point is that it can - and often does - run in BOTH directions. And either of them is wrong, wrong, wrong.

That is known is positive discrimination and where there is positive discrimination there is discrimination.
Giving blacks a big advantage (over non-blacks) is positive discrimination, the result is that non-blacks are being discriminated against.

Exactly. And I hold that ANY form of discrimination should be treated as a crime.

Prejudice is kind of subjective, but the ones that are not allowed in are being discriminated against.
The question arises ofcourse why, for instance, as a Muslim you would want to attend a Jewish school. Or vice versa.

    Why not?

You might find there is more in common between people than you expected.

The Jewish school where half the pupils are Muslim

On topic, I recommend the book, The Freedom Writers Diaries, for attitudes to affirmative action and how they inhibit progress.
