An interesting article points out that air travel alone will produce enough CO2 to make up for all the CO2 the UK puts out and then some if it continues to increase at its present rate by 2050. So there you go. Enviromentalists. Are you ready to ban air travel? Or perhaps ban all expansion of air travel? Do we go back to the days of the ocean cruiser as the only way to travel between continents? (Except for government officials and celebrities, of course. They need a quick way to travel so that they can browbeat us into not driving SUV's.)
Bring It! I'm all over it! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Seriously though, sounds good. Get the planet back to being big. Too funny! :roflmao:
aviation causes only roughly 3-7% of all CO2 emissions, activists need to target a more destructive group before airlines. peace.
If we were to ban air travel we then would be forced into sea travel or other forms that would pollute more perhaps so therefore nullifying banned air transport.
It wouldn't nullify it. Air travel uses a lot of energy, more than any other form of travel. It stands to reason, you're traveling faster and the engine must provide enough force to lift the plane rather than just move it along the road or the sea. Banning air travel is just one of the many sacrifices you will have to make if you are "serious" about global warming. You'll probably also have to ban air conditioning, the personal car, and eating meat. Just to name a few things.
True. To really "do something" about global warming, we'd have to give up all the trappings of modern civilization.
Banning expansion of air travel might be a good idea, but banning all air travel might have its down side in terms of global warming (ignoring other issues such as convenience). It is possible that particles spat out by aircraft cause a phenomenon called global dimming, which actually results in a net global cooling effect that opposes the global warming of the greenhouse effect. So, banning air travel might accelerate global warming. I have to say, I'm not sure on the balance between the two effects, and what the net long-term effect would be of banning air travel. Something to look into, if you're interested.
Sounds like the same reasoning behind the impending iceage theory in the seventies. Particulate matter blocking sunlight therefore decreasing the temperature, correct? If that theory is valid, perhaps global warming could be tackled by returning to dirtier fuels such as coal that put out lots of soot.
