I like giant squid. But not in my swimming pool.

It's interesting that they persisted so long without discovery. It does make one wonder what else is down there - also, it rears the issue of reports of "sea monsters". Historical reporting (i.e. >200 years ago or so) has come up in another thread; is it possible (and I know I'm going to be pilloried for this) to call early reports of "sea monsters" (prob. squid) "traditional knowledge"? The latter term is getting some vogue around biology in the last few years.

Them's big squid. I wonder what else is down there. Would it be too much to hope for some invertebrate phylum unseen till the present day?

Like I mean something way outside the usual pentaradial-biradial-symmetry-echinoderm-arthropod-thingy. Something really old and whack.

Wow, that's something I've dreamed of seeing all my life!

The announcer quoted the maximum reported length of giant squid as 20 meters... it's possible they grow much larger than this. Sperm whales often have round sucker-scars from deep-sea battles with the squids they eat, and a 15 meter squid leaves marks about 10 cm across. But whales have been found with similar scars up to 45 cm wide.... what sort of monster could have made those?

As for what else may lurk undiscovered in the abyss:

I meant something in the invertebrata. Vertebrates don't strike me as too likely, or at least not big ones. I was thinking of something big enough to sink a small ship or destroy a city, say.

Not that [ENC]East Korea [/ENC]is planning anything like that. Heavens, no.

    I've said too much.

Dunno. Not buying the vertebrate thing.

Could an invertebrate be of that size?

Well there's the really big squid. Maybe it could at least pull down a house or something. How come no big evil verts these days though? Where's a Zeuglodon when you need one?

Anyway, we pay all monsters on scale and experience.

Esat korea wouldn't plan anything like that. And what they especially wouldn't plan is fricking laZer beams on the giant squids' heads.

    Another denialist.

...it's so hard being Dictator-for-life of a small, vicious nation these days. No one takes you seriously.

    :bawl:

If you'll excuse me, I think I need to visit one of my great nation's many industrious and liberated nudie bars. Long live the Revolution.

We're trying an advertising campaign next month to promote tourism. Let me know what you think.

"Come to [enc]East Korea[/enc]: you won't need to bring your compass!"

    ...no? Fine. Whatever.

Great Scott... could anyone be sadder than this?!

I think your make-believe country with its all-pervading Jessica Alba fantasies would be better placed on Nationstates than a serious science-based discussion forum.
