Israel and Saudi in negotiations for Arab/Israeli peace
Hi Posters
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...483893,00.html
I have just read the above article with great interest, and i have to say that it shows great courage of Olmert to go through with this and somethign which Israel will truely benefit from in the long term if it pays off.
This will be the satrt of the Saudi Peace plan outlined 4 years ago,m and in whcih i said was one of Saudia Arabia's only good suggestion.
The return of the terirotories for full diplomatic and peacefull relations etc with 7 Arab countries......
It is really encouraging to see reports on this and i greatly applause needs to be given to Olmert and the other parties if this can be pulled off.
Also on a similarly encouraging ote the speech Olmert wrote on Peace with thes Palestinains last week was pushed by Bush and riced in the whitehouse.
Pls discuss

What about Hamas and all the other Palestinian terrorist organizations? If they don't go along with it, nothing changes, does it?
And can the Palestinians police their own areas and keep the terrorists from firing rockets into Israel? If not, what changes?
I didn't see one thing in that article about the terrorism or about Hamas. So ...just who is doing all this wonderous negotiating? And for whom? Israel seems to be giving up a whole lot, yet what do they get in return?

Hi Maximus
thank you for your comments
if their is full peace and return of the terrirtories then Hamas and the other orgainisations will either have to change or be sidelined. these orgainisations fuel themselves on war and destruction, peace will hopefully bring about their change or end.
Olmert is considering the plan which surely is good news. I imagine having peaceful relations with your neighbours is a good thing, and should lead to increases in trade and other economic activities, which should hopefully lead tothe advancement of the region.
Surely this is encouraging that the arabs too are getting off the arses and trying to work a peacefull settlement to all of this.
maxmius i am looking at the long term here and that peace is more advantageous to israel and the other nations in the region than war... How can you be a supporter of Israel and want them to be at war for the next gazzilion years

Hopefully? And hasn't that very "hopefully" been used in the past ....to no avail to the terrorists, who kept shooting rockets into Israel (and thus fuckin' up the whole peace process?)?
At what expense? Letting Hamas terrorists continue to shoot rockets to kill Israelis? Without retaliation or an attempt to stop them?
All long-term goals have short-term costs! What I see is that ye're perfectly willing to let the terrorists continue to kill Israelis with rocket attacks ...and that's okay with you as long as there's "long-term" peace, huh? "Long-term" peace ......like when all the Israelis have been murdered?? Is that what you mean, Zak?

At least olmert seems to be willing to give it a go, must be better than war surely.
No maximus.. the attacks must stop, and anyhow they (israel) have been trying to stop these rocket atatcks from gazza since june and they havent managed to do it yet, so with this peace initiative will bring hope to the region and the militants support will fall, the militants will have no grounds.
And according to the report Olmert seems to be very interested in it now, which is good news.. so he is looking at alternatives to the circle of violence...
Once this peace deal is acheived then Hamas will be nothing... unless they change of course
i've even heard that the israelis are now talking to baugorti (spelling! - the guy who is held in an israeli prison) apparently their is talk about huim being the next PA president. once he is realesed that is..
Sometimes maxmius you have to try alternatives to killing top achieve the results.

Thankfully, Olmert is not the only one who has a say in all this for Israel. He's just the prime minister ...the full government must vote on it.
And you think they're going to go along with that?? No, Zak, Hamas is a militant, violent, terrorist organization, and they ain't gonna' stop with just some silly signing of a paper!! If you think so, then you're as deluded as I thought!

no your right Maxmimus their deputy prime minister Avigdor leiberman will probably vote against it as he has threatened the killing of almost the entire Egyptian population along with quite a bit of israel by threateneing to bomb the Aswan dam!

it seems the Sunni governments of the world have mostly come to terms with Israel. the only troublemakers are the Shia Iran, and Syria.
of course, al-Qaeda and other extremists have not accepted Israel, and i think that the Sunni gov'ts are accepting Israel perhaps to serve their interests by getting western governments to help them fight off the Islamist threat
there can never be peace in Israel until all the surrounding governments have accepted Israel. the Saudi talks are a very good step forward, but all the major players in the region have to do the same.

Hey Othepd
thank you for your comments
i think Syria will get into line if the Golan issue is resolved
the strange thing about this is that alqueda follwo the whabbi sect which essentially is what got the house of Saud to power. the saudi monarchy has created abeast from within themselves with them still being part of the problem and in whcih they cant control or have any power over...
the house of Saud is part of the solution and part of the problem too, very paradoxly i must admit.
Hopefully with this peace initiate=ive and the return of land and peace to the region fully back and pushed by america, would dramatically reduce the power/inlfuence of these extrmist groups.
You are indeed correct Otheapd...

Yeah, but they'll probably get to have a great dinner and some fine wine, so it's not totally a lost meeting. Hell, they might even get to enjoy some women belly dancing, too, so all is not totally wasted.

And let's not forget that some Pal terrorists will probably have some fun firing more rockets into Israel in order to celebrate the upcoming peace!

And lets not forget they would also buy time for rearming-just in case.
