Because we don't already have enough fried foods..

A new fast food is making its debut at U.S. fairs this fall -- fried Coke.

Abel Gonzales, 36, a computer analyst from Dallas, tried about 15 different varieties before coming up with his perfect recipe -- a batter mix made with Coca-Cola syrup, a drizzle of strawberry syrup, and some strawberries.

Balls of the batter are then deep-fried, ending up like ping-pong ball sized doughnuts which are then served in a cup, topped with Coca-Cola syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry on the top.

"It tastes great," said Sue Gooding, a spokeswoman for the State Fair of Texas where Gonzales' fried Coke made its debut this fall. "It was a huge success."

Gonzales ran two stands at the State Fair of Texas and sold up to 35,000 fried Cokes over 24 days for $4.50 each -- and won a prize for coming up with "most creative" new fair food.

Now other fairs in North Carolina and Arizona are following the trend, and other people are trying to emulate Gonzales' recipe.

Gonzales gave no indication of the calories in his creation and said he would not patent it.

"The best I can hope for is that it's the original and hopefully the best fried Coke out there," he said.

But Gonzales said the success of his fried Coke had inspired him. Next year's fair-goers can look forward to fried Sprite or -- for those watching their weight -- fried diet Coke.

"We are trying to cut a lot of the sugar out of it. It has less calories but it's still very, very sweet," he said.

Ray Crockett, a spokesman for Coca-Cola Co., said: "We're constantly amazed at the creative ways folks find to enjoy their Coke and make it part of celebrations like fairs and festivals. This is one is definitely different!"

    Wow.
    That sounds good.
Although I'd prefer cherry syrup to strawberry.
I wonder if it'll be at my local state fair next year? Fingers crossed.

    Thank you, Sam!

In scotland they've been deep frying mars bars and pizzas for years.
No wonder that scotland has one of the highest rates of heart disesase in europe.

and a cherry on the top.
musn't forget the cherry on the top.

    1) it's probably got enough cals to put an elephant to sleep.
    2) he aint gonna patent that coz he knows coke would come down on his ass harder than an elephant thats just eaten one of those coke donuts.

Something to note is theres actually less than four times the calories obtainable in a gram of fat than there is in complex carohydrates or protein. Simple carbohydrates(sugars) yeild less calories per gram than fat, so contrary to some popular perception their isn't a very high amount of calories that you can cram into a gram unit of food. Quantity of food is a big issue.

The calories in food come from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
1 gram of carbohydrate contains 4 calories.
1 gram of protein also contains 4 calories.
1 gram of fat, though, contains 9 calories - more than twice the amount of the other 2.

People don't balance for quantity of food, they balance for caloric intake.

I hate Coke, Pepsi and all fizzy drinks in general (except beer), but I like the idea of this. I might try making it with a more generic flavouring and see if I Can get it patented.

Everyone loves to make a point of that. It's not as if us Scots eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I've tried one fried mars bar and one fried crunchie in my life.

Drinking and smoking on the other hand... those are the main problems.

The pizza place on Edgware road next to the Witherspoons (full moon or something it's called) does some nice stuff. Gut busting, but v. tasty.

Edgware, Colindale and everywhere round about are complete shitholes though. The worst place I've ever had the misfortune to live in.

    There's a few :-/

    Castlemilk, Maryhill/Ruchill, maybe?

It really is spot the white man down in Edgware though. I've never felt so much as if I wasn't in Britain than I did down there. That place is a fucking ghetto. People getting stabbed left, right and centre. Always police chasing cars/motorbikes up and down. ASDA is fucking grotty. It's like it hasn't been cleaned in years.

I was sitting with my old man at the Irish pub down at the shops in Edgware, outside. Some guy came and sat down beside us with this other bloke and whipped out a bloody needle.

And to think a 2 bedroom flat is £200k+

Why the hell would anyone in their right mind choose to live there?

Are those Chinese blokes still selling pirated DVD's outside the shops?
