Sciforums Chess Tournament
I myself would personally love to start up a forum-wide chess tournament to take place in November. We could use a simple, easy-to-use online chess server, such as those found at http://games.yahoo.com and organize games and the tournament structure here in the thread, in Sciforums PMs, and in off-site IM services.
Might anyone else be interested? I am thinking if we get at least 8 people interested, we could start up the tournament.
The tournament:
Prince James
Absane
Imaplanck.
Oniw17
phonetic
Draqon
Voodoo Child
As suggested by Voodoo Child:
White
Prince James
Absane
Enterprise-D
Voodoo Child
Black
Roman
Oniw17
phonetic
Imaplanck.
TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE:
Editted for error. Check!
Round 1: Opening: 8 players - 4 winners, 4 losers.
Round 2: Quarter finals: 4 players - 2 winners, 2 losers.
Round 3: Semi-finals: 2 players - 1 winner, 1 loser.
Round 4: Loser's Bracket Opening: The losers of round 1. 4 players - 2 winners, 2 losers. Losers are eliminated.
Round 5: Loser's Bracket II: The winners of round 4. 2 players - 1 winner, 1 loser. Loser is eliminated.
Round 6: Loser's Bracket III: Losers of round 2. 2 players - 1 winner, 1 loser.
Round 7: Loser's Bracket Quarter-finals: Winner of round 5 and loser of round 6. 2 players - 1 winner, 1 loser. Loser is eliminated.
Round 8: Loser's Bracket Semi-finals: Winner of round 7 and winner of round 6. 2 players - 1 winner, 1 loser. Loser is eliminated.
Round 9: Loser's Bracket Finals: Winner of round 8 and loser of round 3. 2 players - 1 winner, 1 loser. Loser is eliminated.
Round 10: Championship Round I: Winner of round 3 and winner of round 9. 2 players - 1 winner, 1 loser. If loser is winner of round 3, move onto round 10. If not, the champion is crowned.
Round 11: Championship Round II: Self-explanatory from the above.

http://games.yahoo.com has two advantages over pretty much everything: 1. It is free and easy. 2. It sends results of the games to your e-mail. We'll be playing there
ROUND 1
Prince James - Oniw17. Winner: Prince James
Absane - Roman. Winner: Absane.
Draqon - Phonetic Winner: Phonetic, by forfeit.
Voodoo Child - Imaplanck. Winner: Voodoo Child
Round 2:
Prince James v. Absane. Winner: Absane.
Voodoo Child v. Phonetic. Winner: Voodoo Child
Round 3:
Absane v. Voodoo Child. Winner: Absane.
Round 4:
Oniw17 v. Roman. Double forfeit. The first to post, if any, is included. Otherwise, either both will be replaced or the tournament will just go on.
Imaplanck v. Enterprise D. Winner: Enterprise D., by forfeit.
Round 6:
Prince James v. Phonetic. Winner: Phonetic
Round 5
Enterprise D. Winner by forfeit.
Round 7:
Enterprise D v. Prince James. Winner: Enterprise D. Prince James is eliminated.
Round 8:
Phonetic v. Enterprise D. Winner: Enterprise D. Phonetic is eliminated.
Round 9:
Voodochild v. Enterprise D. Winner: Enterprise D. Voodoochild is eliminated.
Round 10 CHAMPIONSHIP:
Absane v. Enterprise D.
Don't forget to post the results WITH the moves if possible!
Start pairing up and seeing what time would be best for you guys. Once everyone has played their game and reported the win/loss, we'll go to the next round.
Note: Draws and stalemates result in a second game played between those players, colours switched. This will continue till there is a winner of that matchup.
Please disregard Lixluke. He is being a bother and purposefully attempting to confuse those in the thread.Last edited by Prince_James; 12-11-06 at 01:59 AM.

Sorry, I'm not left-brained enough to play chess decently. If anyone wants to set up a go tournament I'll play.

Count me in. I usually make silly mistakes and lose my queen fairly quickly.

The queen is not the end-all... however, you shouldn't be bringing your queen out in the opening.
There is an exception.. I saw a game played by a grandmaster versus grandmaster. The guy playing white "gave up" his queen within 15 moves or so. The other guy took the bait and within another 8 or so, he won

Take a look at this, it somewhat resembles your idea in that it goes beyond the mere posting of text.

James is pretty scary there ehh?
Here's what he says that freaks me
James R,
"sciforums is not a matchmaking forum. It is not a porn site. It is not a chat forum.
It is a science forum. If you're not here for science or other intelligent discussion, then you're not in the right place. Find somewhere more suitable. Please."
In relation to your post it might say
"sciforums is not a gaming forum. It is not a play forum. It is not a chat forum.
It is a science forum. If you're not here for science or other intelligent discussion, then you're not in the right place. Find somewhere more suitable. Please."

Dragon.. it won't work because games can be thought of as an intellectual challange. Dating/sex.. well it rarely leads to anything intelligent unless the nature of it is called upon.

I strongly doubt that James R. shall object to this thread.

This thread is about chess, not whether James R. is a good mod or not.
So far then we have these people for the tournament:
Prince James
Absane
Dragon
Lixluke
Oniw17
phonetic
We should try to get at least two more people involved so we can do a three round tournament with or without a loser's bracket.
