People are becoming addicted to mobile phones, causing them to become stressed and irritable, psychologists say. Dr David Sheffield, of the University of Staffordshire, found problem behaviour linked to using a mobile in 16% of 106 users who were studied. Some 16% were found to have problem behaviour linked to using their phone - either lying about how much they used them, becoming irritable after using them or being overly pre-occupied with them. In a separate study, to be presented at a conference in Essex later, he found blood pressure was lower in those who had given up using mobile phones. The result of this was to cause the user stress, Dr Sheffield will tell the British Psychological Society. ------------------- How much stress in your life is attributed to/relieved by your phone?
What network and tariff are you on? You know that most disconnect you if you dont make a certain amount of calls over a specified period.
It is not the phone but the peoples communication skills that are the problem. I would guess that the same 16% would also lie about how many friend they have and become easily irritated while having conversations with others. Remember the phone is as communications tool and if it gets to much it is very easy to turn off.
technophobic geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezer. lol. cell phones make more sense that land lines. i will never bother having a land line again. and it doesn't stress me out. it's a cool little toy actually. i have a treo 650, so it's sort of like having a little computer with me, which I like. i'm thinking of getting a cingular 8125 though. what a cool phone. anyway, the cell is a far superior choice to land lines for me, for business and for staying in communication with my family. i don't think it stresses or relaxes me. it's just a valuable tool.
A mobile also lets you have the freedom to not make appointments. Previously you had to make a date at a fixed time and fixed location. Now you just go into the city and ask where they are. Or they ask where you are. I tend to abuse this also if I am for instance with my best mate on my way to some social occasion. We now have the freedom to stop halfway. If we are urgently needed they will remind us to come. If not then not.
I had a choice of options, too, but you laughed at my choice and called me a "...technophobic geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezer." Huh? Why? Care to explain why your choice is so much better than my choice? Baron Max
I rarely use my cell but I would hate to be without it. I find knowing it is there comforting rather than stressful. It is very useful for calling the phone company to tell them the lines are down again.
Don't have one, but I can see how they would be useful sometimes. I don't even like to answer my home phone, so why would I want to keep one with me? It seems to be, if cell phones are addictive, then the stress would come when you don't have one, not when using one.
i have one but im hardly on it all the time, i use no more than £10 a month and that is to organise friends trips out and shit like that
I have one merely because it's a convenient thing to have and it's also useful if you're ever in trouble, like if your car breaks down or if you come across an accident or whatever.
I don't have one either, I feel the same way about phones as you do. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I think the stress comes from the addiction, e.g. I've seen people get stressed over signal strength and battery power, plus the stress of having it ring in a class or during a meeting (or in the cinema?).
Mine does not stress me out, it is for emergencies only. Thus reduces stress by the mere knowledge it is there. Eg. If I am stranded in my car on a deserted country lane, I can call for help. If my child is ill at school and I am out, they can contact me immediately. ETC. Thus no stress just safe in the knowledge I am not quite alone.
Lighten up stressman Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Your choice is your own. Of course my choice is better for me. I'd guess yours is better for you.
I voted 'take it or leave it' but after reading the responses so far I guess I'm alot more dependent on it than the rest of you are. Sometimes I leave my phone at home because I can't be arsed to have it around - its nice to be unreachable at times..but my friends almost make feel guilty that they can't get hold of me...it's almost like I'm deliberately avoiding contact when i don't have my phone. And text messaging is also very useful...subtle and sometimes you just don't want to talk to someone, but sending a message is cool. And it's useful for saving numbers...song titles...videos...porn...pictures...hell I love my mobile phone!! Should have voted the 1st one
Yeah Im with virgin but im sure you still have to make atleast one call every six months. They are the best network IMO though.
The stress probably comes to people who are anti-social to begin with. If you have good time management skills, there should be no stress at all from cell phones.
Hmm quite possible. My time management skills are pretty good, but I'm not a party person. More a books and coffee kind.
Cell phones are great. Mines almost always in my pocket. It really comes in handy sometimes. For instance: One time I was at a Meyer {grocery store} and had to go to the bathroom really bad. Now we're not talking about just taking a leak. I had to take a major dump, and I mean right then. So I found the restroom, ran in,and went into the first stall. No TP! I went to the second stall, no TP! I went to the third stall, still no TP. I checked for paper towels, put all they had was one of those damned air dryers. By this point I had to go, TP or no. So I went. I was then faced with a dilema. No TP. After some consideration I remembered the cell phone in my pocket. I called information and got the number for the front desk at Meyer. I said, "Yeah, is this the Meyer on Illinois road?" They said, "Yes". I then said, "I'm in your rest room and there's no toilet paper. Could you send some in? I really need it." So a few minutes later a bag boy entered the restroom and asked, sheepishly, "Ahhh......did someone in here call about some toilet paper?" I said, "Right here, dude!", and he handed it over the stall. So you technophobes, what would you have done in that situation without a cell phone? Trust me, just not wiping was not a viable option. This was one major dump.
