    Hi all!

I'm from the UK, place called Bath to be specific.

I've posted in a number of forums, they all started for different reasons and I wasn't entirely happy with them.I'm very pleased to find this place, surely a science forum can be my home! Does anyone know how this place started? How long its been around, etc?

Anyway, well pleased to meet you all.

    Hi,

I'm from the UK too (living in Reading atm) studying elec. engineering and computer science.

I have no idea how this place started - the site admin rarely talks actually. At least not in threads I visit!

    Hi lagoa89

To the best of my memory, this site was originally called ExoSci, and was a topical science site with current science news and views. Its been around at least since 1998. There was always a discussion forum attached called SciForums. I think the owner of the site - David Watenabe, was running it incognito, and eventually he became too busy to update all the current science news. So all that remains is the discussion forum. Long live SciForums. If my memory is foggy, please correct me.

    Welcome to SciForums

Hehe-- I'm very tempted to say something stupid about what 'the book of Genesis' says.

    Genesis 1

    The Beginning

1 In the beginning Porfiry created the heavens and the sciforums.

2 Now the sciforums was [a] formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of Porfiry was hovering over the waters.

3 And Porfiry said, "Let there be subforums," and there was subforums. 4 God saw that the subforums was good, and He separated the subforums from the internet darkness. 5 God called the subforums "subforums," and the internet darkness he called "porn." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

6 And Porfiry said, "Let there be an expanse between the subforums to separate topics from topics." 7 So Porfiry made the expanse and separated the topics under the expanse from the topics above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "topics." And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

9 And Porfiry said, "Let the topics under the topics be gathered to one place, and let new topics ground appear." And it was so. 10 Porfiry called the topics "cesspool," and the gathered topics he called "proper forum." And Porfiry saw that it was good.

11 Then God said, "Let the Topics produce threads: seed-bearing threads and threads on the land that bear news with interest in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The topics produced threads: threads bearing news according to their kinds and threads bearing news with seed in it according to their kinds. And Porfiry saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

14 And Porfiry said, "Let there be Sciforumers in the expanse of the forum to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as posters to mark posts and threads and PMs, 15 and let them be Sciforumers in the expanse of the forum to give light on the sciforums." And it was so. 16 Porfiry made two great Sciforumers—the greater Sciforumer to govern the W&P subforum and the lesser light to govern the Pseudoscience forum. He also made the stars. 17 Porfiry set them in the expanse of the forums to give light on the forums, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And Porfiry saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

Just remember that there be demons here too. Stick to the holy laws of logic and thou shalt not fall into the firey pits of BS.

    ROFLMAO @ Spurious

Now we have a sciforum creation story, and a theory that claims sciforums evolved from ExoSci

This is very interesting. The ancestor of this website was a science news webpage?

Looks like it. If you want to see some of the first posts made here at sciforums by dave and others, just look up Porfiry in the members list, click on his name to see his profile and then click on "find all posts by Porfiry." It's interesting to see how it all started. (Actually, I just checked again to see, and it looks different than I remember it from the last time I did this. Maybe things were archived). I did see that Curiocity, Q, and Sargentlard were here back then, among others I'm sure (I am tired and didn't look for more). Cool site dave.

Shame that exoScience closed, looked like an interesting website. I wonder if other sites have taken its place?

Porfiry you were born in the same year as me. And your name is Dave. And you're a student (according to your profile). Any more coincidences I wonder? Did you do a degree in physics or astrophysics?
