Its called extrapolation, you input all the variables and work out some numbers which will vary, nobody can be sure how many it'll kill until it happens(as it said in the last line of your link), the estimates are up to a certain percentage of the population, similar to the 1918 influenza, which considering modern transport could equate to up to 150 million people.
