The following statement if run by an Admin with access to execute Manual Sql queries, should clear it up once and for all (assuming no table prefixes are used).

a discrepancy implies that there are two or more, fairly sound, calculations
the difference in magnitude is fairly small

compare the figures offered up by the mutt. the errors are gross.
