My school counselor said that marriage is unnatural. He said, "nothing in nature is put together and binded by an agreement. Trees, rocks, birds...nothing is put together naturally like that. Marriage is an institute for the insecure. Think about it, If you were so secure about yourself and your counterpart, is marriage necessary. NO. The only time two people should be put together is to raise children. After that, those two people should be able to go their own way." by the way, he is married. is he speaking from insight? what do you think about his views?

I think it's out of place for a counselor to say that.

Hydrogen and Oxygen bond together, and are impossibly hard to break apart. Birds often mate for life. So do several kinds of great apes.

i mentioned molecules and electrons and protons, but he argued back that they are free to move around when the conditions are rite and make something else. They are not bounded by an agreement, or mad at the fact the there counterpart has seperated.

This converasation was outside the school property

As I pseudo-scientist I'd say that molecules and the like do behave by agreement. If they didn't, why bother with particle physics and chemistry and the like?

I'd argue him worng, just cause I'd want to. I don't really disagree. A person goes through several major stages in one's life, from what I can understand. Youth, middle age and old age, at the very least, and that could be considered three different people. It'd be quite difficult to keep to one person for all that time.

though of course, some argue that marriages are a social and economic arrangement to keep power, wealth and offspring consolidated. With the high cost of raising a child, as a simian, it makes complete biological sense to mate for life. At least, stay together for long enough periods of time to ensure that one's offspring successfully reach maturity.

It isn't what we think about what he said, it's what you believe about marriage that really counts because you must make decissions in your life about this type of matter that affects you. If you believe him then that's the way you choose to live. My own take on this is that if he thinks marriage is "unnatural" then why did he marry? Marriage is a way society has developed so as to protect the children moreso than the parents. Marriage also has laws that apply so that if a divorce happens the earnings of both people will be divided between themselves. Marriage is relevant if you want an orderly society with rules laid down so that the two married people will have a "guide" as to what is expected of them to do according to laws. Many countries allow for many wives to be married to by one man as well as certain religous groups.

Marriage could be a quite natural development for women to secure a safe future for raising children...

and for men to be sure that the children they raised are their own.

    So, it could be natural.

Everything in human society can be argued to be "unnatural". You should've told him that his job -- him working for an educational institution is also unnatural. humans bind each other through "agreements" all the time. marriage is only one in millions of diffierent contracts.

with counselors like that, no kidding kids grow up fucked up.

As a believer in impermanence I would say that marriage, like all human ideas, is worthless but not unnatural.

If it were unnatural, why have people been doing it for thousands of years?

Because humankind has fallen into a disfunctional pattern.

You presume that dysfunction is unnatural. Prove it.

Disfunction may be natural, but the payback is natural, too.

I really agree with that. And of course, people like the idea of having their love for each other officialised. Plus you can have your family and friends come share a special day just in celebration of your love. I don't see anything wrong with that!

Theres nothing wrong with it if you like the idea and all it contains, but Im guessing the councelor was using the word natural in the context of like Ground/ primal. Marriage is after all a concept layered on top of a kind of reality, and requires other less than fundamentally occuring elements and acknowledgements for it to be a proper marriage. People are married by judges and priests right? Judges and priest arent natural. People arent born judges or priests. The paperwork and the laws involved after signing the paperwork and their acknowlegements and enforcements arent natural, theyre part of an elaborate system weve created in society. On the other hand, if we could take marriage as refferring to simply, " mating or bonding for life", it could in some cases be completely natural. Two people could be drawn to one another and remain hand in hand for all of their lives without needing to speak a word about it or do a thing to it to make it seem more solid or safe. So, I guess it just depends on how you see marriage.

I see it from as far away as possible having been married once.. heh

People are products of nature. Just the same as any other animal. This is my view. So i think that all things that we create are products of our psyche. So the statement "nothing in nature is put together and binded by an agreement" I see as false, because we create agreements naturally and so "Bind" ourselves together, in an odd sort of way.

I also don't agree that it is an "institute for the insecure", this to me seems like an attack on marriage stemming from his own insecurities, probably from his marriage. If anything is an institute for the insecure its school counselors!

And his comment about molecules not getting mad when they are separated from their counterpart is questionable, with a little stretch of the imagination. Since you and he are both made of molecules I sugjest next time you see him you should turn his nipple molecules into your food molecules! Then ask him if hes mad about it?

I personally don't want to get married, it really has no meaning to me. But i really see nothing wrong with people getting married, and I dont think its out of insecurities. I believe marriage is an institute of love - the love of ceremonies!

Perfectly true. Mating and living together to raise children; marriage, in the sense of a formal arrangement to do that, is entirely cultural.
