What prayer is that? I hear it a lot, does it have a name?

Also, how does the Hail Mary go?

    That's the "Evening Prayer".

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray Thee, Lord, my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray Thee, Lord, my soul to take.
If I should live to future days,
I pray Thee, Lord, to guide my ways. Amen.

    "Hail Mary" goes like this.

    Hail Mary, full of grace!
    The Lord is with thee;
    blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
    Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

    I prefer
"Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep
Guard me Jesus through the night and wake me with the morning light"
less creepy in my opinion, especially since it's a childrens prayer...

Now I lay me down to sleep ....

The Prayer of the Selfish Child (Shel Silverstein)

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
If I should die before I wake
I pray the Lord my toys to break
So none of the other kids can use 'em

The Hail Mary, also known as Ave Maria. My favorite is "Ave Maria Guarani", by Ennio Morricone for the soundtrack to "The Mission", and somewhere I have a track of Soundgarden playing "Ave Maria", live I think.

One of the most astounding things you can see, however, is a praying of the rosary, which can take hours, ticking off all the holy saints and interspersing each praise with the Ave Maria.

hush little baby, don't say a word
and never mind that noise you heard
it's just the beast under your bed,
in your closet, in your head

Is it me or does anyone else find the "Evening Prayer" to be rather macabre, particularly for children?

If I should die a bloody, horrid death
I'll thank Jesus with my last breath

Ad-libbing, I should have said so.

Hair splitting? Because the prayer exists independently of the praying of the rosary.

Go to a football game at a Catholic high school or college.

And I also know from personal experience that mortally frightened Catholics will recite the Hail Mary in a repetitive babble as a centering device.

It's a useful little hunk of gibberish. One of the most useful I've ever seen in practice.

..not splitting hairs....a prayer is a prayer, a rosary is a rosary. quite simple.
