"OOHH GEI BU GEI QIAN. MA SHANG GEI 400, OOHH" shouts a Chinese dog peddler, as he lifts a dog into the air by a rope around its neck, then slams the dog down to the ground in front of a woman pleading for the dog to be spared. -- LINK TO ARTICLE: http://www.chinasmack.com/2014/stor...dogs-to-get-higher-price-from-dog-lovers.html Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Many people have condoned the consumption of dog meat as a cultural phenomenon specific to Chinese, comparable to the consumption of beef and pork in the USA. This is an argument I can accept, but as a dog lover, I am devastated by the sadistic torture of these animals depicted in this article. Dog owners and dog lovers in China are seen as rich people who don't know the hardships of the everyday Chinese citizen; the ability to afford to care for dogs in China and love these pets is seen as a luxury. For that reason, the events in the article are completely excusable in the eyes of many Chinese. "They are only trying to make a living, by torturing dogs for cash." Some comments by the Chinese: What does everyone think of this phenomenon? Reminder: animal torture is legal in China and they are officially one of the worst human and animal rights abusers in the world. Why would that be? Is this behavior part of the cultural identity of the Chinese, or simply the result of their economic hardship? Why isn't this behavior seen more often in even poorer countries?
There's a new generation of cosmopolitan Chinese with many Western values, including a non-traditional respect (and even love) for non-human animals. The traditionalists are happy to take advantage of them. This is China, after all. Everything has a price.
in some religions most notably Hinduism, cows are considered sacred. from there perspective, the idea that we corral them in pens, feed them recycled food to fatten them up, and lead them down to a slaughtering line that involves a kill step where the cow is shocked with a glorified stun gun(potentially several times) just to be turned into food is just as offensive. to quelch those who might argue this and being the view points of a minority group the world Hindu population is slightly over one billion to a little under eight hundred million in western Europe, the united states and Canada combined(not factoring the fact that a percentage of said populations are Hindu). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinduism_by_country https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=population%20of%20the%20united%20states https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=population%20of%20canada https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=western+europe+population&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAGOovnz8BQMDgwUHnxCHfq6-gYWpUYaWVnaylX5OfnJiSWZ-nn5xCZAuLslMTsyJL0pNBwpZFeQXlOaAZV-JZphsUJisWKm3rSM5Zv-8QKul2wA7xVLtVQAAAA
Looks as if it's beyond the original nature of their festival, it appears as if organised criminals are preying on the weakness of those that keep pets or are empathetic towards animals in general. That festival could easily evolve, for instance if they started creating biscuits or crackers in the shape of dogs, they could eat them instead as apart of the festival (Please note that down any entrepreneurial Chinese people.) at least then the festival can move beyond just China, perhaps it could end up like New Year, Easter or Christmas in the western world.
