—Charles Colson, former Nixon aide, convicted felon, and Evangelical leader whose 1996 novel Gideon’s Torch describes killing abortion doctors.

22.“As soon as Jesus sits on his throne he’s gonna rule the world with a rod of iron. That means he’s gonna make the ACLU do what he wants them to. That means you’re not gonna have to ask if you can pray in public school. We will live by the law of God and no other law.”

    23. "Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It is the same thing. It is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians. Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible than anything suffered by any minority in history." –Pat Robertson

    24. "I would warn Orlando that you're right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you, This is not a message of hate -- this is a message of redemption. 27. "God considers this land to be his. You read the Bible and he says 'This is my land,' and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says, 'No, this is mine.' ... He was dividing God's land. And I would say, 'Woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the E.U., the United Nations, or the United States of America.' God says, 'This land belongs to me. You better leave it alone.'" --Pat Robertson, on why Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a massive stroke

It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with." –Pat Robertson, calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez

    30. "It may be a blessing in disguise. ... Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. Haitians were originally under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon the third, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you will get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it's a deal. Ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other." –Pat Robertson, on the earthquake in Haiti that destroyed the capital and killed tens of thousands of people, Jan. 13, 2010

Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God."

"Out of my church you sacrilegious son-of-a-bitch"

Was once screamed at me by a red faced redneck southern baptist chaplain in an army chapel.
In all honesty, I did provoke the man of pseudo faith.
(I don't know, but it did seem appropriate to repeat it here?)

Reminds me of when Jesus of all people cursed a fig tree because it didn't have any fruit. The tree shriveled up and died. Nice use of divine power there Godboy.

I've said in another thread: I rather like this story as it reveals to us Christ's humanity. it is rather reassuring that even He can wake up hungry and grumpy and a slave to His body chemistry.

I'd also like to say I don't see the purpose of this thread. I know it is your thing, MR to raise all sorts of issues from ghost to gay rights UFOs to fairies, and a good job you do of it - originating thought-provoking threads. The trouble is that you don't know who your friends are. I am often the first and only one to respond to your threads in a positve and respectful way, yet I am a Christian. If you want to know, I don't give a rat's ass if people are gay. I don't think it's any of my business. True some ignorami say a lot of intolerant, stupid things about homosexuality, but I never have. The Bible says a lot of things that- well, the world has changed. The Jews don't sacrifice cattle at the Temple anymore, and when Paul said women should remain silent in church! Ha ha! He obviously wasn't living in the twenty-first century! We've moved on. At least some of us have. I am not saying there are not plenty of bigoted Christians, but you can find bigots of all stripes. Why pick on the Christians? Fight for gay rights if you must, but singling out a group that has members that are intolerant toward you is just fanning the flames. Why not try to be bigger than they are? I also notice that many, if not most, of your quotes are decades old. James Watts, Jerry Falwell? C'mon! Are those guys even alive anymore? Even if they are, they're not kicking. So, I'm sorry but I think this whole thread is just a tad on the provocative, trollish side. hang it up, why don't you and let's get back to exchanging cooking tips.

I think people have a right to hear about some of the bigoted and just plain crazy things Christian leaders say and have said. Naturally Christians will want these statements forgotten if not totally censored from public awareness. Afterall, everybody "knows" Christianity is all about LOVE and doing good and being non-judgmental, right? Or that's at least the official PR line we are all SUPPOSED to buy into. I'm here to show the darker side of religion. The hateful and bigoted and homophobic side that nobody is supposed to talk about. If you don't like it, I don't care. I have a right to expose this ugly side of religion in a public science forum. It exists and should be shown for what it is primarily because it has caused and continues to cause untold suffering and self-hatred in the lives of so many of its victims.

You have a right to expose this ugly side of religion in a public science forum? Don't forget then to also exercise your right to expose this ugly side of science in a public religion forum. You want to be fair, don't you? It's not that I don't like it. It's just that I can't understand how acting in a bigoted way yourself is going to do any good in your fight against bigotry. Christianity is about love and non-judgement. So you know that but apparently the lesson hasn't sunk in yet. You say you are here to show the darker side of religion, but all you have shown us is your own dark side. If I may borrow from the Buddha: "Hatred is never conquered by hatred. Only non-hatred conquers hatred. This is an old rule."

As for this 'hateful and bigoted and homophobic side that nobody is supposed to talk about,' I don't know if we're supposed to talk about it or not. I've never received any such instruction at any service I attended. However, I do know there is plenty of talk about it. Instead of adding fuel to the fire, why don't you work to put it out?

Typical "no YOU'RE being bigoted" Christian comeback. Like the Bible wasn't and isn't the biggest source of homophobia that has ever been printed. Like the vast majority of Christians DON'T believe I'm going to hell just for loving whoever I choose to love. No.. The OP remains as it is, at least until a mod construes freespeech as somehow a violation of Sci Forum rules.

Oh and if you have something against Science, go ahead and start a thread on it. I'm sure many here will gladly engage you on that issue if that's what you want to do.

Here's some things less famous Christians have recently said online. Remember folks, these are the people who want to tell you how to get to heaven!
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"im christian if we came from apes how come were not hairy and have a big mouth and did we end up looking like we do know and besides there isnt any serious proof of apes they showd a video saying an ape was wondering around in the forest that thing looked exactly like a costume that i had saw at a store know one ever cought an ape" (by luv4cs)

"My concern for level of pain of rape would be greater if it weren’t for the fact that most American women deserve to raped because they oppose prostitution as a sexual outlet for men. Since they deserve to raped, I cannot concern myself with the pain rape causes them." (by fschmidt)

"Leviathon is a spirit I have battled as well. It was a hard battle but was won. It was about four months or more ago. My wife and I were in McDonalds and were having a conversation with an angel and Leviathon had come up. I told the angel that i wanted to fight this demon and he said I could. On the way back to the hotel I asked the angel if he could bring the demon to a predestinated place and he said yes. I figured that since Leviathon was from the depths of the sea he would be used to the cold water so I filled the tub up with scalding hot water and blessed the water. The angels (there were two now) brought Leviathon bound to the tub and fought with me. We all pulled our swords from our hips and began running this demon through with all my strength and everything I had. I would say it took atleast half an hour or more. We were all spent but the battle was won." (by nautical999)

"No, God’s Penis is not a biological organ. I never said God’s Penis was the same as man’s penis. Obviously it wouldn’t be. That is why I pointed out God has a Holy, Righteous Penis. That is to say, it’s not the same as man’s corrupted, fleshy one. As I said when this subject first came up, once again: Penises are not just for sex & peeing. It is only because man is evil that he thinks of penises exclusively in those terms. Man is made in the image of God the Father. That is the primary reason why man has a penis. You cannot insert your evil prejudicial ideas of man’s penis onto God – which is exactly what you are doing. God’s Penis is not equal to man’s penis. It’s really not hard to understand." (by Navaros)

"Yes sex at six can cause psychological damage. But thats only in rare occasions. Most girls are fine. Thats a scientific fact." (by ahmed2010)

“A recent survey shows 85 percent of rapes and molestation are reenactments of a porn video/DVD. This means every time someone buys a smut video/DVD there is an 85 percent chance that sale will eventually result in a rape or molestation of a child.” (by The Uniontown Protestors)

"Climate Change is a religion and it’s holy sacrament is Abortion." (by 4timedad)

"When you play with fire, there is a 50/50 chance something will go wrong, and nine times out of ten it does." (by June Swenson)

"Forcing a wife to have sex is not rape as her body already belongs to her husband." (by nick)

"Eating fetuses is MURDER & CANNIBALISM. This is one reason why abortion should be banned. People will probably eat fetuses when abortion is made legal." (by Karl)

"How do Atheists explain the Solar System? why do all the planets revolve around the Sun? is that just an accident or do all the planets have their own minds and know they must do it for us people on Earth. i mean, theirs no other explanation. Scientists cannot explain this at all. it is cleary designed for all the planets to revolve the light. if not then your saying one day the Earth can decide to stop and not revolve. if nothing controlling it whats stopping it from doing whatever else it feels like." (by Jona * D)

"1. If the Bible were not true, logic would not be meaningful. 2. Logic is meaningful. 3. Therefore, the Bible is true." (by Dr. Jason Lisle)

"I said I believe that to end the terrorist attacks, you need to kill ALL MUSLIMS. Which part of that was “cryptic” to you? Which one of those two words did you misunderstand?" (by Gonzo67)

"I have always been afraid of Muslims. I remember the last time I flew (in ’89 I think) I was on the plane and 2 men were sitting I think across the aisle talking in a foreign language. I was terrified that they were hijackers, and I was almost in tears the whole flight. In retrospect I think they may have been speaking French. But it was so scary for me at the time…." (by RHCCapri)

"One of Lady Gaga’s songs on YouTube has drawn 223,934,322 hits (as of Thursday, 06-10-10). That’s getting close to one hit for every American citizen. How has such a “success” occurred? Only Satan can give that widespread recognition of the world to one person." (by Joseph Chambers) -

Who are these people, and where do these quotes come from?

I mean, this shit makes me laugh, but, on the other hand, holy shit...

    Is this actually for real???
Yes, I see the link... I'm not clicking on it though...I just can't believe anyone could spout such utter bullshit.

I think the James Watt quote is bogus. Having said that, I have personally heard Christians express that exact same sentiment. So the attitude towards the environment does exist.

I also think it goes deeper than that. I believe it to be based in the dangerous idea that we are a special creation, separate from nature. Therefore, what we do to the environment is irrelevant.

Yes, I've experienced that with christians very much, including family. Worse yet there is the attitude that nothing matters much here because it will all be over with soon.

I'm all for people saying how they feel about things (which should include people dislike of homosexuality without being labelled as a hater). The only thing wrong with this post, is the forum it's in. It has nothing to do with religion.

So you're cool with bigots. Nice..

It has everything to do with religion. It demonstrates the attitudes and thought processes of religious adherents.

In a small minded and very parochial way, yes I suppose it does.

You realise that nobody outside the USA will have heard of any of these people - and they are all Bible Belt Protestants of a very extreme and stupid kind.

If you want to make a general point about religious adherents being all idiots, you'll need a far wider selection of examples from a far bigger cross section of many more religions.

If, on the other hand, your purpose is just to annoy any Bible Belt Protestants on this forum, then perhaps your selection is more understandable.

But that would be trolling, of course, wouldn't it?

We don't know that. Many of these online comments might just as easily be by conservative Catholics for all we know.

I think it's sufficient for the title of this thread.

You'd have to prove my point was to offend online fundamentalists here. I'm not even sure there are any in this forum, much less that these comments would even offend them if they WERE here. For all I know they might say "Right on! That's what I think too!"

You offend a lot of people here. I am a Christian, and I did say something much like,'Right on! That's what I think too!' Your response was to spout aggressive and provocative remarks, and completely ignore that I agreed with you. That proves that you are indeed a troll, and have no other agenda other than to rile people up.

Exchemist is right. Your flaming has no place on this sub-forum. It is not meant for quoted rants to create your own rant.

You call ME bigoted and now I'M the troll too. You seem to be the only one here flaming and insulting people. Maybe you should go read your Bible and learn about that love and compassion you keep bragging your religion is all about.

It isn't your job to censor threads in this forum. I prefer to leave that judgement to the appropriate people.
