The first confirmed case of Krokodil in the United States was observed a year ago, according to a new report. “We saw that his finger fell off and we saw a severe looking ulcer and sores on his thigh and it did really fit the picture of krokodil,” Thekkemuriyi said. “Our case is the first case that’s been published in a recognized medical journal.”

Arizona may be the "epicenter" of the drug's possible uprising in the U.S., according to a story published on Saturday by AZ Family. But the cases in Arizona have not been confirmed.

In September, at least two possible cases of the drug were reported by Banner Good Samaritan Poison Control Center in Phoenix.

Other potential cases have appeared in Illinois, Ohio and Oklahoma, though, as the Daily Beast notes, confirmed cases are much harder to come by.

Physicians who spoke with the online news outlet said the more likely culprit for the flesh rotting symptoms are dirty needles that infect heroin users with HIV, Hepatitis and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This can lead to "gangrenous skin, deep abscesses, and loss of limbs."

But, as Raw Story reported this week, two doctors from Missouri told the American Journal of Medicine that they treated a patient last year "whose skin was rotted away from using krokodil." That report marks the first official case of the drug making its way to America, according to KTVI.

“We saw that his finger fell off and we saw a severe looking ulcer and sores on his thigh and it did really fit the picture of krokodil,” Doctor Dany Thekkemuriyil said. “Our case is the first case that’s been published in a recognized medical journal.”

Real krokodil is an opioid, home made versions have a lot of nasty junk besides the opioids.

    from Wiki at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desomorphine

Many regular junkies have those sores and other, much worse problems as well.

Krokodil is Russian slang for desomorphine, a derivative of morphine that is about 8x as powerful. It was patented in 1932. It is rather easily derived from codeine, which is widely used legally and therefore not difficult to obtain.

Like most of the new, more powerful, laboratory-manufactured drugs (crack cocaine, methamphetamine, etc.) the desomorphine explosion can be blamed squarely on the "war on drugs" that was pioneered by the shit-for-brains U.S. government. America's religious roots present the preposterous notion that it is possible to change morality through legislation. (Remember how well that worked with slavery? 150 years later their great-great-great-great-great-great grandchildren are still not entirely free!)

Many of the traditional recreational drugs like marijuana, cocaine and opium are bulky, awkward to transport, or have other disadvantages that make them easily detectable. Marijuana, in particular, can show up in a drug test sixty days later, and it has an easily identified odor when used.

People like to alter their moods, so when the drugs they like become unavailable or too risky, they settle for something else.

Opium was supplanted by laudanum, a concentrate, then that was supplanted by morphine, then heroin, and now we've got krokodil. Opium was widely used, yet few people suffered any serious or permanent harm. Desomorphine ain't like that. Think about that the next time your government asks you to trust them.

I don't think it would be as much of a problem in the US, as you can't buy cough syrup with codeine in it without a prescription.

..and all of the prescription codeine is adulterated with NSAID's that will kill your liver if you try to get stoned on them. Lots of young folks do that anyways, many die as a result.
