I wouldn't care less if people accepted me here or not. They don't know me, I don't know them.
If you have the "knowledge" to get to this site...stay...and sign up then you obviously have views that you want to broaden or share. You don't need to read things that you are not interested in. Those books and plays might work for you. Yes, reading does make you more "educated" but if you are not smart enough to notice a certain bias in the material you could become worse than someone who doesn't read.
Every has something to contribute and everyone can learn from it. Even from stubborn people, we can learn why they are that way. Although learning why they are a certain way isn't why most people come here...they want facts and "educated" opinions.
As for the spelling slang, I find it extremely hard to follow a logical thought when it's written like that.

11-22-02, 07:29 PM #3Yeah, I can't help thinking that I'm talking to a toddler whenever I see it. Generally thoughts are expressed better when written in half normal english. As for the spelling slang, I find it extremely hard to follow a logical thought when it's written like that.
I would suggest knowing your stuff before engaging in debate. And engaging in debate often, intelligent debate that is actually fun to do, that is lacking in blatant insults or ignorance. This will not only earn you respect but people might actually look for your posts if you start to win, they'll become more interested in you and what you have to say.
It all comes down to listening and voicing your opinion afterwards. The order can be no different.
And also by starting threads that you feel are interesting to everyone, will you also gain an "e personality."
Good luck. Hope to see you around.

But i think to write like that is a bit pretentious. I too have a tendancy to miss letters, mix up letters and to misspell words. Personally i do this because i am writing fast and i dont want to lose the thoughts that i have. In my opinion to write in pidgin english is pretentious becasue the writer goes out of their way to do so hence apostrophies ( ' ) which take the effort to type! Missing letters and mixing up letters is not the same! IMO pidgin english writers are, as i have said, pretentious and should make more time, if they are being published (!), to write properly.I think there is a difference.
Unfortunately thinking does not seem to be valued on this forum. Facts seem to be all the veiwers are after.Must i prove this point for it to be my opinion??

I have no trouble with misspelled words from posts, do it myself. Mine are usually the result of speed typing and a lack of proof reading. When I first came here I wanted to be a stickler for "correct spelling". I learned later, some bit of patience in decyphering text. Whether you can spell or not has little to do with having something worthy to say.
When decyphering slang, written in the mode of one such as fast-eddie's style, it becomes more of a type of assembling a puzzle to get the heart of the point. Slang is usually local in variation which means that you have to guess at some of the meanings from the context. When you are guessing there is a lot of room for misunderstandings to occur. Happens all the time here. There is nothing that replaces a command of language for getting your point across. Less time spent in figuring out what the poster is trying to say means more time to concentrate on the meaning of the message. Simple as that. I sometimes think there is also a "laziness factor" involved in such types of posts.
Topics for discussion can come from many places. News, conversations in life, thoughts, questions, and I have even brung bulletin board comics and humor here. So the interest factor is where ever you find it. Seldom is one in a locked up condition where there is no outside stimulation to find a topic.
How you word your point has a lot to do with simutating responce. If you interest your reader, they will respond. Many of the members have made the comment that long posts bore them. That means to capture the imagination of the reader and the interest it should be brief and to the point.

I don't care if people find me interesting at all. I post whatever I feel in the mood to write at the time.
And I feel inclined to say
'Adios Eddie!!!'

coolness
i'll start organising a sendoff partyWhat a mean attitude. Did fast-eddie beat your wives or something? Has he done something that has personally affected your life so much that you wish to never hear from him again? Sometimes people say things that you don't want to hear - that doesn't mean that they should go away so you don't have to hear it. I found nothing in fast-eddie's posts that should provoke such a response and if this is a result of the synthesis of your reactions to all of his posts, make that apparent. I see only an attempt on your parts to maintain ignorance. And I feel inclined to say
'Adios Eddie!!!'
I really hope that sciforums does not pass members who do not agree with the majority off by blocking and kicking them out. Sure, we do not have free speech on these fora, but I will not stay here if we are being censored solely for the purpose of an "I don't like his/her ideas" notion. I have seen it requested in the Feedback forum many times ("ban these newbies who post crap!") After all, that is all they can post, even though it is the members and senior members most of the time who begin the thread in the first place... I don't think so. Newbies have just as much right to speak their minds as the senior members - I hope so, at least.
Please don't allow sciforums to become an elitist convention of self-prescribed "intellectuals".

Gee, I can not ever remember having said that someone only has so many posts and therefore should not be heard. My objection to new members hasn't been because they are new. All of us at some time started here with a post count of zero. I realize that you were throwing out thoughts and it was not specfic where it was aimed, Phrenetic. I do not think it was aimed at me but I respond anyway as an interested party.
My objection was that a lot of the posts coming through the forums were like chat style of communication and of subject matter and how it was dealt with. Something this site is not about. The difference for a forum is that you have time to assemble your thoughts, research if you wish, and present a coherent topic. Where chat is how fast can you type your responce to remain in the conversation.
There has never been a penalty for disagreement or stating your opinion. That does not mean that one is at liberty to disrespect the admin. There are limits. The forums need different points of view and disagreement to survive.
Sciforums has always been about science. It is the site's "roots" and where it is based from. When the "uproar" started it was because the body of members were upset at the direction of the forum. The body is what is paid attention to as it is the heart of sciforums.
To be honest there are times when I do get a chuckle from fast-eddie, both in his expression and his thoughts. Reminds me of someone I know.

Thanks for the clear-up, wet1. I completely agree that a discussion board is not a chat room; however, posts like some of those in "free thoughts" are inherently unavoidable in a forum of this many members. (Ok, this is feedback, now.) So, I suggest either allowing the posts in "free thoughts" or to create a separate "Spam" forum where posts do not count.
Tell me if you want me to move this to feedback.
