In some other forums there are "like buttons". So people can express they like someone's post. Is there any way we could get a "likes button" here? And why so far up to now have we not had one? If there is any other members here that would like this as well. Post your comment here.
Personally, I prefer discussion over Facebook vagueness. Like is just an easier "Me too", and really doesn't contribute much. At least polls can be descriptive and varied.
In another science forum I like using the Like button. Sometime you just don't feel like responding to a post, but you like the post you just read. It gives you a way to express your support and it also, lets that person know you've read the topic even though you haven't posted to it. Also, it's only available to members as lurkers don't get to use it.
This will never be a feature here. And, frankly, I'm quite happy with that Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Because this is not facebook. The last time this came up, the vast majority of mods etc (if I remember correctly) where against making this website more like facebook.
The other science forum that is using the like button doesn't resemble Facebook anymore than this forum does. Sorry that answer is not a good one.
Well..if we can't have a "Like" button...can we at least have a "I think your a total twit" button....that's at least in the spirit of Sciforums.
Side note to this post of yours. It is nothing IMO like face book at all. I also think you could keep the names of the people that like the comment undisclosed. Until they have reached the 1000 post mark.
I think the 'you're a total twit' button is a good idea. If you have a like button, all the twits will like all the other twits. It will be meaningless.
I've seen on other forums where the "like" feature was used as a pissing contest. The other issue is entirely based on the few that bother to use the thing. So it's left as not so accurate. AlexG points out that it's more a clique thing, than a validation.
I agree here. If you see comments on yahoo articles, people can give a thumbs up or down. If you get so many thumbs down, your post is automatically hidden due to low rating. then users have to intentionally read it by clicking a link to unhide it. This would help people to stay in the flow of intelligent discussion because then idiots posts would likely get hidden. So random troll and baiting remarks can be disliked. I think youtube has something similar as well. I like the idea of being able to rate individual posts. We can rate threads, why not individual posts? Edit: on second thought, if you have a "you're a twit" button, then the twits will just be voting to "twit" any intelligent post that shows their twittery. Considering twittery is probably more common than nontwittery it may not be a good idea after all.
Never heard of that. I don't hang out on social networking sites. I don't like people very much.:grumble:
Perhaps not, but it's the correct one Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I'm just saying what the outcome was the last time around.
