Saw this....reminded me of when i lost my dog.

I have had dogs all my life...

I loved them all. My SN is the name of my favorite of the bunch.

His name was Gremlin. (Gremmie) He was a Naval drug sniffing dog. He was "retired" from the N.I.S., and was scheduled to be put down.

I had him for 9 great years. He was my best friend.

People will let you down, a dog never will...

When I am gone, release me, let me go-
I have so many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me with tears,
be happy that we had so many years.
I gave you my love; you can only guess
how much you gave me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you have each shown.
But now it is time I traveled alone.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly fallen snow
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
of beautiful birds in circling flight
I am in the star shine of the night
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

That was wonderful. Put that in the poetry thread.

I thank my dog every day for being my puppy. She is a huge part of my happiness and she knows it.

We've all lost a near and dear pet here. My black lab Dakota died October 21st 2010. He had been showing signs of his age for a long time before his death, erratic or unsual behavior i knew he was going to die, then one morning i found him outside on the porch cold as ice.....i cried for hours... later i was digging a grave for him. Still makes me teary eyed just thinking about that day. However my younger brother took it even harder then the rest of the family, that dog had saved him from drowning in 2001( he was 3-4 at the time). We always buy a little batch of flowers every year and place them on his grave.

One of the most important things to remember is that even though your dog was a member of your family, he also had a job to do. He was responsible for keeping you active, letting you know that you were loved when nobody else seemed to love you, to keep you from taking yourself too seriously, and (finally) to help you understand the concept of mortality.

If your family had a gardener, a maid, a doctor, etc. for thirty or forty years, and suddenly he died, you'd grieve. But then you'd realize that his job still has to be done, so you'd go out looking to hire a new one.

Your dog would be really disappointed if you let his job go undone, after all the years he put into making things right. So honor him by keeping the position filled.
