The Confederate States Constitution Was Based On Conservative Idealism

    Please read this link:
    http://www.filibustercartoons.com/CSA.htm
It gives a line by line comparison between the United States Constitution and the Confederate States (C.S.A.) Constitution. For the most part the C.S.A. Constitution parrots the Union's but there are some notable alterations that are both progressive and backward. I want to know what the rest of you think about the more progressive ideals from that era. I have listed a few clauses I found interesting.
    .
    Article I - Sect. 2(3)
    From Link
The CSA appeared to aspire to have a smaller Congress, as Representatives could represent up to 50,000 people, while in the US the max is 30,000 per Congressman.
    Article I - Sect. 2(5)
    Article I - Sect. 6(1)
    Article I - Sect. 7(2)
... the CSA President (has) the power to approve certain parts of a bill into law, and reject other parts. Today this power is known as a "line-item veto".
    Article I - Sect. 8(1)
... the CSA essentially bans trade protectionism by saying tariffs cannot be imposed on foreign goods for the sole purpose of protecting local industry. It also bans "bounties" from the Treasury - (i.e.) - government subsidies (cannot be) distributed to offset the cost of managing certain uncompetitive industries.
    Article I - Sect. 8(3)
The changes forbid Congress from spending money to "facilitate commerce."
    Article I - Sect. 9(9)
    Article I - Sect. 9(10)
The CSA Congress is forced to only issue money bills that cite an exact dollar amount, and cannot grant a penny more after such a bill is passed.
    Article I Sect. 9(20)
This is quite an interesting addition, as it demands that all laws only relate to "one subject".
    Article II - Sect. 1(1)
    Article II - Sect 2(4)
The CSA adds an additional check to prevent the President from exploiting recess appointments.
    Article V - Sect. 1(1)
    .
I am a Yankee so the part I find ironic is that back in the 19th century conservatism was associated with the Democrats.

Also for most of the twentieth century - until Richard Nixon won the Presidency by appealing to the racial bigotries inherent in the Confederacy, and Reagan established the custom of amnesia with regard to the consequences of Confederate political ideology.

Conservative political ideology as distinct from Confederate political ideology is still mostly a Democratic Party attribute.
