BSOD STOP: Error

Hi All,
Looking for some guidence with my 8 year old Toshiba Laptop.
XP won't boot up anymore keep getting this BSOD error:

*** Stop: 0x0000007E (0x0000006, 0x806A4529, 0xF78AE6E8, 0xF78AE3E4)

Sometimes when I power it on the XP boot screen comes up and it goes into scandisK mode. During the 2nd leg of the scan I get a;
"Deleting index entry Crypto in index $I30 of file 12676" then goes to BSOD with: STOP: c000021a unknown Hard Error.

I will point out that it was working fine early yesterday.

Have you tried booting into the last good configuration, pressing F8 as it boots up? Like many Windows errors, this one seems to have a few different causes, from bad program installs to hardware problems. If it's software, then maybe that will get you back into Windows to further research what's failing. I've seen a few mentions of PCAnywhere, but that could be just coincidence of some people who had the same issue. Maybe there was something else that you had recently installed before this problem?

Yes, I have tried that option to boot.
Seems like that is not the answer.
No new soft or hardware installed in many months.

If you can't get into Windows at all, including safe mode, then the next step may be examining the hard drive itself for failure, just to eliminate that possibility. There are a few free utilities you can put onto a flash drive and boot from to test the drive, and go from there.

I had that happen too. The solution for me was to put in the Windows CD and boot to it (this involved first going to into BIOS and telling it to boot from the CD drive first). Then I had to hit the "R" key for "Recovery" or something like that. Then it gave me a DOS prompt. Next, I typed in CHKDSK/R and let it run until finished. That took an hour or so. After that, I was able to boot to Windows again, (again telling BIOS to boot from the C: drive instead of the CD).

However, the problem did come back again after a few months, and I had to do it all again...

I should mention that mine never went into Scandisk mode on its own, so it might be a different problem.

Bottom line... Windows error codes are 100% useless since no one can grep the Windows source tree to look for its origins. The 0x0000007E errors are particularly convoluted if you don't know the other error code dumps. The two most likely causes of failure in this case are a bad hard drive or bad memory. The former is more likely seeing as it's an 8 year old laptop.

Maybe not if it's bad sectors on the drive. But format fixes Windows problems. Especially if you put something else in its place.

I do have a feeling it may be the HD that is root cause.
Not many of my sacred files on it, so not much love lost if I cant get them back.
I will try the dos prompt scandisk via the XP recovery process.
and report back.

Now getting a BSOD with "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" message...this cant be good, can it?

I would take it somewhere to double check that it's not the motherboard, but it sounds like your HD is toast...

Good news is that if it is going bad, you can still tie into it as a second drive and probably see and recover the data. I did that once with a failing drive, and sometimes I'd have to try and read a file numerous times, but eventually saved everything.

Great news.....
I did the XP cd recovery chkdsk /r
it took a couple of hours,
kept going from 50% up to 75% and back a few times,
but finally completed. Typed in EXIT,
rebooted with Last known good config and BAM
SHE'S BACK!!!!

Going to do a back up of all important files and use her till she dies!
