I would like to ask you what was your reason for posting in this forum when you were in front of the computer, ready to type. What did it cause you to log into SciForums.com?
    Thank you.

I love that song! I did it in karaoke one night, although it turned out not to be a very good song for me. I love Jann Arden. Unfortunately her U.S. audience is so small that she'll probably never tour down here and I'll never get to see her live.

Isn't this why we talk to our pets?

Well then check out Wynn's suggestion, "Insensitive." Maybe you'll get that one stuck in your head.

Or if you're feeling particularly angry at men today, check out Jann Arden's latest hit, "Where No One Knows Me." My favorite line, as she's driving away with her dog to start a new life in a place where no one knows her:

I try talking to someone who I call a friend if I have problems that I can't seem to resolve on my own. Sometimes it takes another person to see things that we don't and help be a guide on our journey through time. I do however find solace in solitude at times but not to get away from what's troubling me but to just find relaxation and comfort away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Thank you for a thoughtful reply Buddha12. I have a few mentors whom I share with yet for the most part, I too am a mentor and many people come to me to share their burdens.

My comment was aimed more at persons who wish to engage me in dialogue and debate on forums. I prefer not to choose sides in many debates because I have no firm stance on most contentious topics, religion being just one example.

'As ye harm none, do as ye will.'

I walk the middle ground and this seems vexing to some. There is a moderator on another forum who has invested considerable effort to get me 'off the fence' on some of his pet topics.

    That's okay.

He's still trying to best me at chess. (One in three succeed.)

No, you just say that. You don't walk the middle ground at all. You do hold firm stances, but you're a sugar-tongued weasel, an eel.

I've been trying to figure you out, but you just won't spill your secret.

    Back to Edward!

While that is a very good way to avoid confrontation sometimes it just lets others think you are weak and they take advantage of you. Taking a stance shows at least two things to others. One is that you do believe in whatever you believe in whether others feel that way or not at least you can believe in it. Two,you also show yourself that you can stand up and state your thoughts without worrying about offending others that think differently than you do. Just because you think there is a god or not or if there's life on other planets isn't going to cause someone to think your bad or offensive but have the where with all to debate an issue that you think is one way or another. I can say there's not enough information about life on other planets to let me think that I can't decide but I do think that since we exist here then certainly others exist somewhere else. I say that as an example of my way to resolve issues that one can sit on the fence about forever but somewhere inside you have an opinion about everything but are not wanting to hurt others feelings so they will like you more better than not liking you at all for what you believe.

    * * * * NOTE FROM A MODERATOR * * * *

Wynn: That was totally uncalled-for. Scheherezade has never given us any trouble. You, on the other hand, have on occasion been "hard to figure out" and unwilling to "spill your secret. Perhaps you recall your inscrutable performance on the thread about suicide that left so many of us in exasperated frustration?

Please dial it back. If you have a criticism, say so in plain English. To call someone a rude name except in jest (and the jest had better be obvious and welcome) is to insult them, and if you'll review the rules, personal insults are a violation.

We don't enforce that rule very rigorously, but that's no excuse. You're articulate. Please express yourself better next time.

As far as I can tell, Scheherezade is as transparent as the windshield in my car. She says what she thinks in plain English and has told us rather a lot about who she is.

This board is for socializing, not fighting. If you don't like somebody, don't talk to them. At least not here.

The only 'truth' that I have observed, Buddha12, is change.

Of course I have opinions but what purpose to debating opinions?

My opinions are constantly evolving so I see no point in expending energy on explaining my present thoughts to persons who have no understanding of my own frame of reference nor I of theirs.

Even among my friends, we do not debate each others 'beliefs'. I doubt we even know what things the other stands firm upon save that we are similar in that we keep any commitments made.

We share what we are doing presently and help each other in finding solutions to problems when asked for input.

Where we may find a variance of opinion, as in what angle is best to trim a horse's hoof, which varies somewhat between breeds, individual horses and even front and hind hooves, we just agree that we don't agree.

I trim my horse as suits me and he trims his as suits himself.

On icy surfaces, my horses do not slip, while his was always sliding on the hind feet.

I use the past tense deliberately as unfortunately the gentleman who had the honor of being my most mature equitation student passed on about five years ago. I taught him much about horses and I learned much from him regarding opinions.

People don't change the minds of others through words, in my experience.

People change their minds of their own accord and for their own reasons.

    Thank you for your comments.

Several of you there "in exasperated frustration"?
    My "inscrutable performance"?
From what several of you have called me there, you clearly didn't think that my performance was "inscrutable" - rather, you came across as being totally sure that I am an [expletive] and an [expletive]. No, you appeared fully certain to know what I am.
If anything, your frustration was merely from my refusal to accept your judgments and labels of me.

    You dial back yours.
And how about enforcing the rules when someone has a go at me?

    What?!

So much for this being a science board.

Wynn, the difference is simple - one-off name calling or minor childishness is something to simply be brushed off with thick skin and maturity... however, your attacks on Scheherezade are verging on complex-level issues - it seems you quite literally follow Scheherezade into threads just to launch personal attacks. Consider what Fraggle and I are saying as warnings - if you disagree, that is fine. However, keep it at least semi-professional and leave the childish name calling out of it.

Saturnine Pariah, by the time you get your closet organized and change into something more... ? like pastel teflon - this, too, will have blown over. Gluck.
