Estimate... 7,000,000,000 people on the planet. I think Spidergoat (I got that nick wrong earlier...) has something close to the number of drivers on the planet. Add powerplants, heaters, lawnmowers, tractors and chemical industry precursor usage to that. Semi's are using conservatively 50 gal. each per day. Each car driver, averaging between long distance commuters and local driving, probably use about 4 gallons per day. 3,000,000,000 x 4 = 12,000,000,000 semi's... about 50,000,000 x 50 = 2,500,000,000 powerplants.... guess 100,000,000 lawnmowers and other... guess 1,000,000,000 15,600,000,000 gallons of gas/diesel per diem
Some interesting figures at this link, only charted until 2009, but it does give one a bit of a feel for how much crude oil is used and by which countries. Given in barrels, so you'll have to convert to gallons. http://www.indexmundi.com/energy.aspx
Really? That much fossil fuel each day, every day. Well surely that couldn't upset the delicate balance of the atmosphere!
Well, at roughly 3.5 Billion gallons of oil burned per day, over a year it's enough to increase the CO2 content in the atmosphere by a bit less than 1 part per million.
Do cigarettes qualify as fossil fuel? mmmm... probably not... unless we are discussing that it seems to fuel the old fossils that suck those babies down to the butt. 1.7 billion packs are sold every day. That works out to about 10,000,000,000 cu ft. of various greenhouse gases every day.
Depends on if oil used means just burned for power, or all the other numerous uses of petroleum as well.
In case it needs be pointed out, the unit of measure is "thousands of barrels per day" Somthing to consider is that gasoline is a mixture, not a direct oil extract. Even diesel has additives to increase the Calorific value. Much are alcohols and now we synthesize much of the alcohols with ethanol, so those barrels go for more than just fuel. Consider that it takes about 5 lbs of crude oil to make 1 pound of synthetic PVC. That 16.5 billion gallons estimate might even be low...
