I would suggest it's down to a culture that likes to experiment.

Sometimes experiments might go awry, other times they can advance society and culture and possibly the whole world. It's actual great that a culture can do that rather than be so wrapped up in high taxation, high unemployment or just economic ambivalence.

While furry ears might not seem a major advance in neurocognitive prosthetics it does potentially generate a consumer market for research to be continued into the area (Since the consumer base is what pretty much defines research by identifying a feasible interest for venture capitalists)

It will move from a fluffy pair of ears, imagine using a Mnemonic extension to your mind to do tasks that are more menial or labour intensive, perhaps for older people replacing the pre-requisite of qualifications with Professional systems that entwine with a persons though process, so they can operate at the same level as someone that has had full training, or for those that suffer from things like Alzheimer's/Parkinson's where rather than being at a loss because their brain suffers degeneration or damage of pathways an external mnemonic system could allow for remember what to do, identifying when to do it and even potentially implanting a positive "reward" for doing a task that would otherwise be left undone due to tardiness.

Further still there is then the potential advancement for use with Telecommunications, albeit such systems would require being trained to identify what you want to filter, otherwise your Boss might get a SMS message stating the exact reason why you don't want to work on a given day (in all it's graphic detail) which would otherwise undermine it's selling points.

Lastly there is the complete parallel emulation of the mind, this would allow a person to work both as the biological they are use to as well as being in an emulated system. Should they get hit by a bus and the body is destroyed, their mind, what they know and what reality has been emulated could still continue beyond potentially allowing for a type of transcendence to beyond.

Not bad for a questionable taste in fluffy ears.
