What an actual meltdown looks like at Chernobyl inside the reactor room.

They have upgraded the.emergency to the highest level of nuclear emergency, level 7 which is the same level as Chernobyl

Why is there no talk in the media about leaking alpha-emitting particles?

No idea, that was in the South Australian "advertiser" today

That is a image of the nuclear pile after it went into meltdown and before they covered it up with thousands of tons of concrete.

Yes, but a pile of what exactly...and how did they get close enough to take a photo?

Out of interest why do you care about alpha particals when there are gama emitters leaking? Alpha is almost safe, paper will block alpha emitters

That was done by one of the workers who died because of radiation overdose. Thousands of people died but the first to die were the workers who stayed there and sealed up the plant. That is an image of what the uranium rods looked like after the meltdown.

Yes, but when its inhaled or ingested it destroys the genetic code in adjacent cells.

Holding it in your hand will not kill you.

Sure but there are gamma emitters being released so who would care about alpha emitters? Sure hydrogen nuclie can kill if you breath in or swollow enough of them but from my understanding they are very short lived and as you said skin and a simple dust mask can stop them. Only massive amounts of lead can protect against gamma and x rays

Twenty eight people died, not thousands.

That might be true of the initial explosion however there were lots of people effected by the radiation. There use to be team of children that were granted the chance to visit different countries after the incident for a mixture of reasons, one of them was the fact that they weren't going to be about for much longer. The number of kids equalled far greater than 28. (Technically 30-31 deaths are mentioned in that URL)

Alpha emmissions are unbound protons, ie hydrogen nuclie
    Beta emissions are free electrons
gamma and xray are photons, ie electromagnetic radiation like light but much more energetic and at a higher frequency
