And now we have a Republican/Tea Party candidate for congressman that dresses up as a Nazi storm trooper on weekends to reenact WWII battles. Is it ok for congressmen/women to dress up as Nazi's and play war games (reenactments) in the woods on weekends?

I seem to recall Prince Harry of Great Britian getting into trouble for wearing a Nazi costume to a party. Does the same rule apply here? Should people be upset if their leaders dress up as Nazi soldiers for a costume party or for a romp in the woods to reenact WWII battles?

Do the re-enactments include the Nazis losing the battles, as in the actual war?
If so, no biggy, just like civil war re-enactments, somebody has to play the losing side, and re-enactments can be a legitimate historical study.
But if these are just re-enactments that glorify the Nazi victories, then this is ugly.
The pics and the weak story make me think it's the latter, but there isn't much to go on.

I'm sure just as with the civil war re-enactments, they stay historically accurate.

Which means the Germans will win at times..

However, being a re-enactor, doesn't mean you believe in Nazi ideals.

At least I would hope not.

I played cowboys and indians as a kid.. Everyone wanted to be the cowboys, they were seen as the "good" guys.. Well someone had to play the indians too.

Yep, I went to their website and this is what I found:

"Disclaimer: This page or anyone involved in its creation, or members of reenactment groups listed here, are in no way affiliated with real, radical political organizations (i.e., KKK, Aryan Nation, American Nazi Party, etc.) and do not embrace the philosophies and actions of the original NSDAP (Nazi party), and wholeheartedly condemn the atrocities which made them infamous. May the victims of this unspeakable horror rest in peace. As we portray the German combat soldier, we are only interested in recreating his daily life, furthering our understanding of what it took to be a soldier, and at the same time having fun reliving history. We honor the men (and women) who really experienced the war, and we salute their courage and loyalty to put their lives on the line in defense of their native soil, no matter what nationality or government."

So, as to be expected in politics, the ones complaining are doing the usual making a mountain out of a molehill.

meaningless a disclaimer is irrelevant. just look at their description of the division's history and the goal of SS casts that disclaimer into doubt

    Seems legit.

When I lived in Ga I went to a civil war re-enactment, and these guys were really into recreating historical accuracy. Their camps and method of dress and food was as authentic as they could make it, on both sides, but no one thought that the guys doing the re-enactment of Rebel soldiers were wanting to secede from the Union.

I don't see that the description of the division's history invalidates the disclaimer. Lots of Europeans feared the USSR and its communism/socialism, and rightfully so. It's not surprising (nor is it pro-Nazi) to mention that a particular military division included anti-communist volunteers from other nations.

The fact that joepistole started this thread should have been the first clue...

I can only be amused at what these Iott defenders would be saying if the shoe were on the other foot and a Democrat was caught running around in a Nazi uniform in the woods on weekends.

Given the Republican/Tea Party nonsense about teleprompters sending secret messages to the president (mind control) and prison camps being built to lock up American citizens and FEMA death camps...I can only image what Fox News and Republicans would have done with news of a Democrat candidate running around in the woods dressed as a Nazi on weekends.

except your glossing over the fact it a Waffen SS division the armed wing of the Nazi party. yes the discription seems innocent enough until you remember what the SS was

I get that some people love the uniforms, but come on. I mean, doesn't it mean anything to these people what the uniform stands for. There are many other uniforms. After all in real circumstances, uniforms are worn in respect and they're very important for the soldiers aren't they?

I wonder if it is some sort of Sado-Mazochism kind of thing. I bet this is some sort of reflection sexual in nature, lol.

Its part of history though and we cant deny that. There are movies and illustrations of them and to cut all that out would be a little odd.

You have to remeber the Nazis themselves would have prohibited this behavior (under similar circumstances) so in essence we would not want to condone this or agree with it.
